The Boston Athenaeum is one of the oldest libraries in the US. we got a private tour, one of the best in Boston, It is hidden and not marked very well, truly making it a hidden gem in the heart of the city. A private institution, you usually have to make an appointment before visiting. The building architecture is old... More

If doing the Freedom Trail, don't miss this free spot! A lovely building with some fantastic architecture, old books, and wonderful art. Please don't bring your children, your cellphone, or your loud voice.

I participated in the renovation of this historic site 15 years ago. What a national treasure. Old school style and stacks. A real book lovers dream. Backs up to the Granary Burial Ground. A must see right near the Golden Dome of the State House at 10 1/2 Becon Street.

I've been a member for YEARS, and I think this is one of the great hidden jewels in Boston. Although it's a private library, guests are welcomed into the main library, which is a stunning example of classic Boston architecture. It's the oldest library in the country, and they have an amazing collection. Membership is NOT expensive, either! The library... More

It is a beautiful building inside but essentially a private library with only first-floor admittance for non-members. There is not much to do there unless you are going for the intermittent exhibits. We saw an exhibit on Mid-19th Centure Bostonians in June, which was mildly interesting but beyond that, this does not seem to be a place where you could... More

Absolutely free hour-long tours are offered Tuesdays and Thursdays at 3:00 p.m. Each tour is limited to 8 participants, and the focus is on the history and portraits & sculptures scattered throughout the historic building (1849). This tour is the only way for non-members to see the architecturally stunning upper four floors. Just a half block from Boston Common park... More

The Athenaeum is private members only library located in an historic building filled with great art and good stories told on the tour. You don't have to take a tour to visit, but if you want to get off of the ground floor, you will have to join the library take a free tour, which was well worth it. We... More

Lived in Boston ten years before I even knew it was there and it's right off the common. Went forthe Edward Gorey exhibit, which deserves 5 stars itself. Really cool oldschool upper class Boston at it's best. A real slice of history that you don't usually see.

If the smell of a library makes you smile and you need some quiet time during your vacation, visit the Athenaeum (very close to the state house with the gold dome at the top of Beacon Hill). It's cozy and peaceful like the best libraries and bookstores, but without the annoying blended coffee machine noises prevalent at some stores! The... More
