Heard some good reviews however we didn't really enjoy obsidian dome, to be honest it looked like a mountain of tarseal. Perhaps it's just not our thing. The driving track there isn't the best not signposted well and we ended up off road accidentally on some dodgy terrain

Lots of trails around Obsidian Dome. Wonderful for day hikes. In the winter, there is a little parking lot by Hwy. 395, and from there you can cross country ski or snow shoe along the groomed road. There is no charge for this. The glistening obsidian and snow are so pretty in the winter.

You have to make time to see this! The dome Is gigantic and shines in the sun like you can't believe. It is crazy to see that amount of obsidian.

very interesting place to visit. you have to drive on a dirt road for a little ways, but any car can make it. very fun walking around the obsidian - but be careful - very sharp!

Partial dirt road to get there, but well worth the drive. Be careful trying to scale the dome as it might not seem dangerous, but the rocks are unsteady and slides happen when people try to walk on the slopes. Geography at it's best!

Reading some of the other remarks let's start with an important point: this is an awesome sight, not an all day stop... So make the time, it's all of 30 minutes for a photo. Just wandering up to the cliffs you'll see Obsidian and bubble Lava the size of your car [no joke] or, for a complete experience, hike around... More

I give it 3 1/2 stars because it is a unique geological formation. We went all the way up and loved the glassy black volcanic rock. Pretty awesome.

Take a walk around the dome and really look at the rocks! if you dare, hike to the top. Great views, but the obsidian is more impressive.
