I went to take a course, "Artisan Baking I" that was mostly devoted to Sourdough Bread. The instructor was an expert both in baking and in teaching. I came away feeling the I could really do good Sourdough Bread on a regular basis. The School has several hundred classes over the course of a year. They are in a variety... More

I have been going for a few years to various fibers workshops. The instructors are excellent. Brought my adult daughter this time. She had a great experience although she had never made anything like this before. A comfortable enthusiastic atmosphere

I took a fall equinox photo workshop and found everything to be top notch. The instructor was engaging, the meeting room spare but entirely suitable for our purposes, the location on the harbor in Grand Marais was perfect, and we all loved the make-your-own pizzas in the purpose built wood-fired oven on the final night. I hadn't spent much time... More

Wow! I have never heard of such a thing as a boat building school before. We stumbled across this school because we were going to sail on a schooner, and the school plaza is where you catch the boat. After our sailing, we went in to look around the store. This school is keeping all of the folk arts and... More

So if even if u think u have no interest in traditional skills check out the folk school. They have something for everyone, frm bread making to timberfraim house building. To top it off their campus is gorgeous and location can't be beat.

I admit a weakness for anything on the North Shore of Lake Superior and am particularly fond of Grand Marais. But the Folk School?? what can I say. Charming people, great ideas, they have a gift shop where you can buy things made by local artisans. I tool the sail out on the Hjordis and it was spectacularly enjoyable. Taking... More

The North House Folk School, now around for about 14 yrs., is one of the best craft schools in the country. Start with the location, Grand Marais, MN. The NHFS sits on the west side of the bay, right on Lake Superior. on the east it's a short walk to town and on the west is the municipal camping gounds.... More

Learn to build your own coffin, knit mittens or make knives from scratch. Traditional crafts taught by experts make this a must on any visit to GM. Check out their schedule for one-day or longer classes.

This is a great area to walk around. They have done an amazing job with landscaping and adding building. Take a ride on the Hjordis (sp?) Schooner Sailboat out into Lake Superior for a 2 hour relaxing sail.

We had not seen the campus for several years and were wowed by the look and feel this year. As usual the folks were top notch and as freindly as can be. We enjoyed our time and will go back again and again.
