If you are in Kerala, then this is the first thing you should do. Either book a houseboat for a whole day or take a ride in Shikhara for 5 hours (don't go for anything less than this). Get to see the way of life as one takes a boat ride through the smaller channels- countryside. Ferry service for the passengers was interesting. Sometimes as boats came close to each other esp the bigger houseboats, wondered...

It was simply a real with open eyes...a paradise. the sun, the seaside, the backwaters, people and food were simply the best. It is not India like we imagine, but it'sa a place where to stay at the and of a hard travel around India
First, as I mentioned in my review of the houseboats, you do not get to see the backwaters from a houseboat. You need to get on a small boat to go through the canals, but this has become too commoditized. The canals are nice, but I think this is not a place to come from far away. Nice if you...
