As the Docent points out early in the tour none of the wealth particularly wanted this estate after it was built in the late 1880s but when Doris Duke obtained the home everything changed. First what is most remarkable is the landscaping culminating in the rushing ocean pouring under the the ocean walk every few seconds and the plushness of... More

Doris Duke's smallish mansion at rough point has the best overall location at the end of ocean drive. This is NOT a Newport preservation property and is somewhat pricier for admission, but worth it. The guides are very knowledgable and have smaller groups than the big mansions. Walk the full grounds to get the best experience.

This is an expensive tour, at $25 per adult. Tour groups appear to be limited to 12 persons per start time which was good. This is a mansion, not unlike the others on Bellevue, but what there are three things remarkable about it: 1. The art, furnishings, and what Doris Duke did with some of the rooms is over the... More

The setting is beautiful, the house is spectacular, the history is interesting and the art work and furnishings are the best! I had seen an exhibit in a NYC museum of Doris Duke's Shangri-La, her home in Hawaii, and I was most anxious to see her Newport home.

I live in the Newport area and decided to tour Rough Point for the first time when a relative came into town. I have been to several of the other Newport mansions and I can say that Rough Point is definitely my favorite. As several of the other commentators noted, Rough Point is not as opulent and formal as the... More

Josh was our tour guide and he not only knew details of countless numbers of priceless antiques and the art collection. But, even better, he provided a personal portrait of the owner, Doris Duke. I left feeling inspired to make a difference to causes I support, as Ms. Duke did for Newport, conservation efforts of several kinds, abused/neglected children and... More

A worthy visit and tour. A little more depth on the Doris Duke's personality and choice of lifestyle would round off a great tour of the physical aspect of her Newport Life

A tour of Doris Duke's Rough Point estate will cost more than any other such tour in Newport that I know of. The woman selling tickets in the house said they appeal to the discerning visitor, that is, not the hordes packing The Vanderbilt trophies, but the tour itself did not really distinguish itself to me. It's a wonderful house... More
