Informative welcome center nice drive through park where you can see where the lines were formed between the union and confederates. Can understand why Grant would never had taken the city and had to surround it and cut off supplies to force surrender.

Spends some time here. And most importantly walk though the cemetery by the old iron side boat. Locate the old cannon barrel that is vertical and placed as a monument. Then read the inscription to realize there are more than 12k unknown solders here from the civil war. Think about that the next time the media trumpets a body count... More

I think the NPS has done an outstanding job memorializing this historic siege site. I liked how they brought in soldiers from this fight to determine where they were standing and fighting. The rangers here were helpful and didn't mind answering a million questions. The visitor's center has an interesting film and display area, as well.

As an Englishman with scant knowledge of the American Civil War it was very instructive to see this wonderful memorial. The driving tour works through the entire seige with the information centre adding the actions that led to the seige. For a city to preserve such a site almost in its entirity is remarkable. To see the remains of the... More

Unlike other Civil War Military Parks which I have visited, the combatants laid out their battlefield with the tourist in mind. Vicksburg's driving tour allows you to see the alignment of forces and the progression of various attempts to penetrate the Confederate defenses.

I've visited Vicksburg many times over the last 50 years and I always find something new each time. Vicksburg was the key to the Mississippi River, and when General Grant captured the city, the South was doomed to be eventually defeated. Many monuments along the driving tour tell about not just the 45 day siege, but of the battles that... More

YOU can drive your car through this massive Park. So many monuments, plaques and military statues on display. Canon's preserved. Walk along the actual battlefields

My husband and I have been visiting Civil War sites over the past few years and this was one of the best experiences. Might have something to do with the knowledge that his great grandfather (from Iowa) fought here. That aside, it is a wonderful natural setting and you could really spend an entire day here driving and stopping and... More

My husband and I visited this park in April, 2013. We live in Maryland near many civil war battlefields and we have visited most of them. This is the best we have ever seen. It is very informative and interesting. The recreations are excellent. It really makes one understand the nature of objectives of both sides in the battle.

I studied the Siege of Vicksburg and the associated battle in freshman Military Science and never forgot how important those actions were to the outcome of the Civil War. Now, over 50 years later, for the first time I understand what was the reality represented by the arrows and symbols on the textbook maps. The terrain where the fighting took... More
