According to legend, two brothers kept trying to return a statue of Kannon, the goddess of mercy, to the Sumida River only to have it returned to them the next day. This temple located in Tokyo's Asakusa district was built to honor her.

"Early in the morning is when you see ordinary people starting their day by coming to the temple and offering their prayers. The surrounding shrines and the small garden are also less crowded, and there is a sense of tranquillity. Sensoji is not an old temple like the ones in Kyoto, but it is very de..."finitely a working temple rather than a monument, and that is what interested me most.
Later in the day, it gets very crowded, and walking up Nakamise Street is a bit of a circus. There were a few interesting shops there, but most of them were too touristy. There are better shops in some of the nearby side streets. Don't let Nakamise Street put you off the temple, it is possible to get there via other streets.

"With limited time we hit just the main building (Honkan?) behind the pond. In two floors the exhibit covered a dazzling array of Japan's history through artifacts and art...not too much of any one thing, and well-spaced. "
"On a Sunday we walked a big circle in the park along with lots of Japanese families and couples. There were traditional Japanese group dances going on and musicians elsewhere. We visited the temple in the middle of the pond and enjoyed the food that lined the path to it. The food in broth (oden?)..." such as hot dogs, stuffed cabbage, tofu was very tasty; as were the grilled squid and fried chicken. The crepe vendor near Ueno zoo and the carnival rides was a hit, and they serve soft-serve ice cream, too.
