It was Saturday of Memorial Day weekend so everything..." was booked but we thought we'd risk it at this 1st come 1st serve destination. 2 of the 3 lower campgrounds were full but the wheeler peak cg at the top was open (at 3:30pm on a weekend popular for camping). The 12 mile drive to the top has spectacular views (and I grew up in Estes park co so I know views) and the cg is at the tippy top. $6 bought us a beautiful spot, #19, in the very back of the 2 loop cg nestled in the aspens with views of wheeler peak. The water was shut off still and the toilets are non-flush, so it is a very low maintenance campground. We were the only people with a camper. This is not the place for a large rv.
