Arduaine is a wonderfully moist and mossy coastal garden, influenced beneficially by the North Atlantic Drift and enjoyed by enthusiasts from all over the world. Twenty acres of outstanding woodland plants include not only a major rhododendron species collection with a leaning towards the more tender, but also all the usual spring-flowering favourites such as camellia, pieris, azalea and magnolia. Other trees and shrubs take the flowering season on into the autumn along with an inspiring miscellany of bulbs, perennials, climbers, water plants and ferns, many rare and unusual, many down to earth and familiar, all interesting and beautiful in their diverse ways. A spectacular coastal and island panorama can be enjoyed from the easily accessible cliff top viewpoint. Visitors are welcome every day and will find something of interest throughout the year, come rain or shine.

Built before 1275 on a huge rock overlooking the Firth of Lorn, Dunstaffnage was the mighty stronghold of the MacDougalls. The castle, with its huge curtain wall, was captured by Robert the Bruce in 1309 and remained in royal possession for some years. Dunstaffnage became the temporary prison of Flora MacDonald in 1746.The location – stand on the battlements, overlooking the Firth of Lorn, and see just why the MacDougall chief built his castle where he did. The formidable curtain wall – amongst the oldest standing castle remains in Scotland. The ‘new house’ of 1725 in the courtyard – perhaps where Flora MacDonald was held prisoner. Dunstaffnage Chapel – tucked away amongst the trees, an extraordinary legacy from the 13th century.

"We loved the otter and seal feedings and the aquarium. It was a wet day so we couldn't enjoy all that was on offer. The staff were great but we regretfully beat a hasty retreat when the midges came down."
"I went to Sea Kayaking Scotland as a re-union with three friends. We were pretty much all novices . Our instructor, Ken, arranged a 2 day expedition. We carried all our equipment and food for 2 days on the water and an overnight camp.
Ken showed us what we needed to know. Throughout the trip he ar..."ranged small exercises so we would have the necessary skills to take on the next challenge. (I am sure he also used these moments to assess our level of ability and confidence.) That said, Ken didn't get in the way and let us get on with things.
Everything went smoothly. The route was well judged for our abilities. There were some exciting moments in waves and currents. The scenery was amazing. All in all it was a great trip and I have no hesitation to recommend Ken and Sea Kayak Scotland.

"While this may be a small distillery, as one of the few urban distilleries left, it certainly has a lot of character. Got a nice welcome, saw the small exhibition and were given a nice informative tour of the distillery. Tour guide was light-hearted and did not leave anything out, even though, as al..."ways, no photography inside. On the other hand, aside from the distillery itself, we were also shown the warehouse (with a fairly extensive commentary) and appreciated the cramped conditions the distillery is situated within. Got also two wee drams of the 14yo and the distillers edition, plus a free glass to take. Of course, there was a little marketing on the side, but it did not get too pushy.
Having visited other distilleries owned by Diageo, Oban exceeds their standards and can be recommended for a visit. 8.2 / 10
