- Robert MAustin, TX499 contributionsCame to visit the area in a February and wound up spending some time in this museum. Enjoyed the free visit. Not a huge place, but definitely full of information and insights of the college and surrounding area. The full life-sized flying dinosaur (sorry, can't spell it!) was very impressive as was the fossilized bones of just ONE enormous wing. The usual cowboy, frontier, and old-time exhibits were also around to be enjoyed and to learn. Definitely a fun & interesting place to spend the time and if I had young kids it would be a MUST see spot.Written 19 February 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - C6851JNdonnabCanton, TX222 contributionsThis shop has thousands of antiques. We browsed at least 45 minutes & still didn't see everything. This shop is a rustic decorator's dream. The staff was so nice.Written 9 February 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- Shannon G2 contributionsAmazing little bookstore in the heart of downtown Alpine. They new, used and vintage books. The recommendations marked in books by staff members were fun to browse and came out with several gems.Written 31 December 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Art R17 contributionsIgnore the bad reviews , this is one of the most awesome side trips we have ever taken. Some attractions, like the drive by ball of twine in Kansas, or the worlds largest rocking chair are just too easy to appreciate. This is the real deal. This desk must weight well over 100 pounds and for two students, to drag it up to this rocky point to study must have been a real party evening. Then, to have it become a legend is awesome. As for the trail markers and directions , yes they suck. Part of the fun is finding the thing. As for the all the meandering senseless trails all over the place, I suspect this was once a ranch with cattle and the paths were original worn by the cattle. We have them all over our ranch in Kansas , cows are stupid. I was going to put the exact GPS coordinates in my review , but decided not to. Note: there were no white trail markers when we went. A few rocks with white lichen to confuse you but nothing we could find that you could follow.Written 31 December 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Larry RIndio, CA478 contributionsStaying in RV site for two nights. Drove to La Linda ghost town today and will take motorcycle ride to eastern side of Big Bend tomorrow. Visited Hallie's Hall of Fame. It free to guests. Not sure if there's a charge if passing through. Interesting adobe building housing a collection of artifacts and details of Hallie Stilwell's life.Written 18 November 2017This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Clay EMoab, UT75 contributionsYou may have to rent a high clearance vehicle to get to this place, but it'll be well worth it. Go in the winter, maybe go with your camping gear so you can camp in one of the finest dark sky places in the Lower 48, as well as be close enough to not have to rush while walking around the ruins of the mine and community that surrounded it. Was first there over 30 years ago with both 35mm and 2.1/4 cameras, and had spectacular weather for photos. Have been back more than once since, including 3 times on my mountain bike. Worth to trip.Written 2 November 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- boudinSan Antonio, TX292 contributionsEvery guy on the field is playing his heart out, hoping for a chance at the Bigs. This is baseball at its purest form, without the baggage of huge contracts or unhappy fans. Nobody on the field makes much money and the fans appreciate every hit, every good play, every hustling out.Written 23 June 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - WinebibblerFulshear, Texas, United States61 contributionsThis gallery has a wonderful selection of artworks from local artists. Items range from geoid t-shirts to wall art and glass work. You will regret not stopping in see what is there. Need a hat to keep the West Texas Sun off your face and take home as a souvenir - CatchLight has it. There is also a wonderful assortment of greeting cards to chose from. It's enjoyable just to have a walk around to see what is there.Written 11 December 2021This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - TeamTexHouston, Texas187 contributionsKokernot Field is described by Sports Illustrated as “Best Little Baseball Field in Texas (or anywhere else).” The views from the stands are excellent with the mountains in the background. The walls could use a new coat of paint, but the historical background with Mickey Mantle and Satchel Paige playing there makes it look vintage instead of rundown.Written 14 March 2021This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Salma29Warsaw, Poland106 contributionsWhat a great shop full of all kinds of beautiful and fun treasures. I loved chatting with the owner. She was warm and helpful in answering all my questions. I ended up buying a stunning turquoise McFadin bag. I really hope to buy any additional McFadin bags through them. The owner even had her high school son trying to help my husband get tickets to the high school homecoming game! What kind of store does that? So very thoughtful. The entire store is totally charming and inviting. A truly great place.Written 22 October 2020This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Wayne WPhoenix, AZ53 contributionsWe visited the Gallery on the square, part of the Big Bend Arts Council. A local artist was “minding the store” and told us all about the Art Walk coming up on the weekend. A very knowledgeable and helpful gentleman.
A wide variety of art from local artists and artisans were displayed. My wife and I spent an enjoyable hour perusing the works and purchased a nice print.
If you are coming to the area to explore the artwork, this is a great place to begin your tour.Written 22 November 2019This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. My first trip up this trail where I went all the way up, was with 3 friends with backpacks and a week to do the Outer Mountain Loop. This is a strain with 40 pounds in the deep sand of the creek, then up the switchbacks to the Laguna Meadows area, but it's a beautiful gateway that goes from desert to alpine in a few miles. The fire of (I believe) 1968 burned the slope you hike up through, and have not been back since the fire of April, 2021 so I don't know what this looks like now. Homer Wilson's Line Cabin, at the bottom of the steps from Maxwell Scenic Drive is a great place to enjoy a lunch before heading north to the hoodoos and, if you have the energy, the wooded lower slopes going up. A great hike, with places to camp (ask the Rangers), that feels like you're actually a thousand miles from other people when the road is just a few miles away.Written 2 November 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Zack MOro Valley, AZ393 contributionsSpend a few days hunting quail here in Feb. Very quiet and scenic. Stayed in our RV - would not recommend taking a big rig here as the roads are fairly rough and tight.Written 16 February 2019This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Bill SAlpine, TX50 contributionsThis is a local production with very talented musicians and corny jokes/skits! We enjoyed it immensely and recommend you go to the show. Dinner was provided by the Saddle Club and included a very tasty steak and sides.Written 21 June 2014This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Rob B403 contributionsIt's a very short and flat hike into the canyon. It's worth spending the minimal time to check it out.Written 3 January 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
