"The Longmen Grottoes were well worth the trip from Xi'an. The Buddhas were unlike anything we've ever seen- very extraordinary.
We were staying in Xi'an and took the high speed train to Luoyang to visit them. It was tricky, but not impossible. The Xi'an high speed train station is located outsid..."e of the city- you can take the subway there but it may be more efficient to take a cab. Buying the tickets to the train was difficult- you won't be able to buy them from the automated ticket machines without a Chinese ID card, so plan some extra time to wait in line at the ticket window. We had the train number written down so it would be easier to get tickets.
The train ride was very comfortable and took about an hour and a half- it was also pretty cool to try the high speed train!
Once at the Luoyang station it was an easy taxi ride to the site (10 RMB there on the meter, but 20RMB back flat rate).
Plan to do a lot of walking and stairs once in the site.

"These Grottoes are probably in the worst condition of the major 4.Dunhuang,Datong Yungang Grottoes,Maijishan Grottoes. The grottoes are located nearby Luoyang or a 90 minute bullet train ride from Xian. The taxi ride from the train station is 10 yuan by meter or 20 yuan negotiated rate.
The entranc..."e fee is 120 yuan to enter and expect large crowds. The grottoes are on 2 sides of the river ,with the best ones on the right side.Expect to do some climbing to get around the grottoes and view the statues.Over the years many of the statues have been stolen or vandalized. The color on the statues is not very good.
The main square is up a set of steep stairs in the middle of the grottoes, this is where you will do most of your picture taking. The square was sponsored by the queen.Good luck taking pictures without people in them.We were lucky enough to have some crazy chinese teenagers run interference for us.
After finishing the grottoes to the right ,cross over to the other side of the riv...
