"Being a resident of Mysore, I have visited this temple on the Kapila river bank, about 26 kms. from our place, a number of times. This is a very old temple. On Mondays (especially in Karthik month) it will be very crowded. The presiding deity is Shiva. Other deities found here are Subrahmanya, G..."anesha, Saraswathi, Parvathi, Sathyanarayana, Anjaneya, Navagrahas and Nataraja. There is also a huge Nandi (bull). In the peripheral corridor, you find a number of very sharply sculpted beautiful idols of Shiva in different forms. The one of Markhandeya, Yama on his buffalo and Shiva erupting from the linga is very good. On the upper portion of the walls you also find beautiful paintings depicting various mythological stories related to Shiva. Earlier there wasn't much arrangements for the pilgrims; but in the last decade, the temple got renovated and there are rooms, dormitories and cottages and also pay & use bath and lavatories for the pilgrims.

"These temple of Belur and Halibid are a MUST visit for any one who enjoys beautiful architecture. The material is black granite and the engravings are exquisite for the choice and workmanship."
"A must see for some one who has an interest in temples or Indian history. There is also a legend attached to this area linked with the erstwhile rulers of Mysore state."
