Opened in February of 1997, the Asarco Mineral Discovery Center (AMDC) is designed to convey the vital importance of mining in our civilization. Everything that we use everyday was somehow extracted from the earth — either by farming or by mining, and “if it can’t be grown, it has to be mined.”Located 20-minutes south of Tucson, AMDC has an exhibit center, theater and gift shop. For a nominal fee, tours are conducted of Asarco's Mission Mine; an active open-pit copper mine. Tour schedule is subject to change, reservations are recommended.

"It's the only Titan missile facility left in the US that's been kept in close to active condition. There is a small museum in the lobby area that can hold your attention as you wait for your tour to start. The gentlemen who were leading the tour were very knowledgeable about the missile, the facilit..."y, and the history. Group size was kept reasonable and there was plenty of time for questions. They can accommodate people who have limited mobility with an elevator, but it's not a wheelchair friendly tour. If you have any interest In military history or life in the Cold War era, you should make a visit. Combined with the Pima Air & Space Museum in Tucson and the Boneyard bus tour and you have a pretty cool set of memories.

"This terrible piece of our nation's history is preserved lovingly in the amazing Sonoran desert. It is one of a small group of historical museums operated by a non-profit foundation, so your Golden Eagle pass will not work. Don't argue with the docents about it as I saw one man doing. Just pay the s..."mall entrance fee that helps this place stay open, and have a nice short tour with someone who cares very much about preserving this story so that maybe history will not need to be repeated.
You might be moved, as I was. I was the lucky volunteer who was able to sit in the Captain's chair in front of the master control board during my tour. When the orders to fire the missile came in, it was my responsibility to turn the key. I suddenly realized what it took for the personnel who had been assigned to this post to bury their conscience and do what their Commander-in-Chief ordered them to do. *I* don't think I could have done it in real life. I once again thank those servicepeople whose job...

"I am a conservationist. But I am also a user of all things requiring metals, so admittedly a hypocrite. I was horrified to see the open pit mines on my trip to Arizona. I couldn't believe that there were no regulations in place to prevent such a despoilment on the landscape. I wanted to learn more, ..."so I found this tour on Tripadvisor.
I had a private tour with Ed and Kermit. Knowledgeable and good-natured, Ed was able to answer most of my questions, and without engaging me in useless hyperbole. Copper is necessary, and that is that. The prime technology used to extract the metals is based on a process probably discovered 100 years ago. Since the market is so volatile, the mining companies only invest in technologies to make their operations more profitable, NOT technologies that might save the planet from the blight of open pit mining.
Take your kids to this mine and challenge them. Ask them what they think of the process, and then ask them if they might want to go to a mining ...
