The Goleta Butterfly Grove is an Environmentally Sensitive Habitat Area where your can view the overwintering Monarch butterflies between mid-November and mid-February. It is adjacent to the Sperling Preserve on the Ellwood Mesa. The Ellwood Mesa is 137 acres of natural terrain with designated trails and beach access. Free parking is available at the Ellwood Mesa Parking Lot at 7701 Hollister Avenue. The walk from the parking lot to the grove is a little over a half mile and is marked with trail markers. It's a beautiful walk on a dirt path.To ensure the safety of the monarchs and enjoyment of the public, we ask that visitors please observe the following rules: -Always stay on designated trails and roads. -Stay out of the roped-off areas. -Watch your step when entering and exiting the grove, and avoid monarchs which may be “puddling” in the surrounding areas. -Do not touch or harass the butterflies. -Avoid making loud noises. -Keep dogs on a leash. No bicycles, horses or motorized vehicles in the grove. -Please take your trash out of the grove.

"This was our favorite course when we lived in Carpinteria/Santa Barbara. It's not super busy or expensive but it's beautiful and has a view of ocean and city. It's tucked in the avocado groves above Goleta but easy to get to off freeway exit Storke Road. We liked it for the (very) elevated tees. ..." Now that we live in the south we REALLY miss them.

"I grew up going to this beach and I love it. It has less sand than when I was a kid but still has a nice grassy area for picnics, a restaurant and a pier for fishing or strolling. We took the kids here for Memorial Day weekend and found parking and sand space without a problem. The kids enjoyed i..."t. The only issues might have been missing shower-heads on the bathrooms closest to the pier and a very, very messy main bathroom/shower building near the group picnic site. One of the toilets had "issues" and polluted the rest of the building. I will return to Goleta Beach and we will brings the kids back too! Don't look for good surfing at this beach but stand-up paddle boarding is possible. Kayaking is also good here and I used to kayak out to the kelp beds quite a bit as a youngster. It's always fun to see what life you can find in the kelp beds. Oh yes, one last thing, as with most beaches in SB, watch for tar on the feet when you get home.
