"You're on Balboa Island: A five star sand bar in the middle of crowded southern California, an hour from Disneyland. So what is fun, cheap, and historic? The Balboa Ferry, of course. For a paltry sum you can ride a classic wooden three-car ferry, built in 1955-57 and get a great view of Newport Harb..."or. Take the kids across to the Balboa Mainland, ride the Ferris Wheel, and if money is burning a hole in your pocket take "The Flyer" to Catalina for the day. All of this will be very memorable.

"The Wedge is a classic and historic Newport Beach location. Known for a horrific shore break but fabulous body surfing, it is absolutely wild when the big winter waves arrive. Surf at your own risk. The Wedge can be dangerous and is not for children or the inexperienced. Over the years absolutely th..."ousands of swim fins have been lost there. It would be interesting to know where they all went.

"There are several islands in Newport Beach but only one has a public sidewalk all the way around it. The "Big Island" is a tad short of two miles, and the "Little Island" is about a mile. Walk them both and you will have earned the right to buy a world famous frozen banana or "Balboa Bar" on main st..."reet. The best part of the walk is looking at the houses and pondering why people pay millions of dollars to live on 30x90 foot, sand filled lots, subject to earthquakes and rising sea levels, and very limited parking.
