The original family farm house overlooking a 10000 year old vista of Long Island Sound stood on the site from 1745 to 1836 before it was replaced in 1838 by this Greek Revival mansion built by Jay's eldest son, Peter Augustus. The landscape of 400 acres was home to 5 generations of Jay descendants and their servants through 1904. Today it is the oldest National Historic Landmark in New York State with a geothermal system and is home to countless programs and performances in American History. It is a Hudson River Valley National Heritage Area destination and also 1 of 13 sites on the African American Heritage Trail where visitors can learn about Jay's antislavery legacy. « less
