"Bridges are cool. This one in particular made a long (45 minute or so) trip into a short one (45 seconds or thereabouts). It also made new things possible, like jumping to your death - previously not really possible because you could only jump out of trees on the side of the gorge and roll down the ..."hill, not nearly as interesting.
Since completion in the 70s, the bridge has held the records for the highest above the river and the longest arch, but it no longer holds those distinctions. It is currently the fifth highest and the third longest in the Americas, and it will surely move further back even in those lists over time.
If you take the 45 second route, stop at the observation area and at least take a look at it from the upper section, and if you have time, climb down the steps for a unique vantage point. Not many do (for obvious reasons). Well worth a trip.

Va. 82, still drivable beneath the new bridge, is several miles of winding one-lane pavement that begins in the town of Lansing and descends through a series of curves and switchbacks to the old bridge 870 feet below; then ascends on the other side to the township of Fayetteville. This serpentine drive provides an excellent look at the bridge superstructure and you will be amazed that this old road was used daily...
