"Bob Murphy is a master of the subject matter and the terrain and the nuances of his client's interests. You get the feeling that this fit gentleman could take you through the approaches up and over the mountains and then through the battle, all bloody day, if the client can keep up. But with me he ..."was patient. I have never been so well oriented as I was by Bob to the South Mountain notches, to the contours of the ground, and to the flow of the battle, as I was with him. He knew the combat leaders' strengths and weaknesses, but more than that and unit sizes and weapons ranges, he made you feel like you understand how dark and rain and the challenges of communications shaped the battle. And, my special interest as a former infantry officer: logistics. Bob agreed that one of the great limiting factors in battle was ammo. When you run out, that's it. Bob is a great guide. Be sure to contact him.

"One cannot imagine the horror of small arms and close by artillery for both the Federals and Confederates in a small field of fully grown corn where thousands died or were wounded. And that was by 9 am of that fateful one-day battle. But the National Park Service has preserved and explained this ke..."y battle to a wonderful extent. It should be experienced slowly, with a guide, for at least half a day.. It should be understood for what you can see to the south mountain ridge on the horizon and what you can't such as events at Harpers Ferry and Manassas, and doings in Washington. It is all there for you at the center and on the battlefield.

"WE arrived at the visitor center just a few minutes before the 20 minute ranger talk. We then went to the 20 minute movie. WE bought the auto tour CD and booklet for our tour of the battle field. This is an inexpensive way to learn about Civil War history. Admission was $6 for the car loan. The CD /..." booklet were $20. I would suggest going to the ranger talk before the battlefield. You sit in a room with many windows and get a battle overview along with getting to see the lay of the land so you have some idea where each side set up and in general where the battles took place. The CD tour takes you to a number of stops. You can get out and walk a number of pathways around the park. WE mostly listened to the CD. The auto tour took us 2-3 hours. We had a great time.
