"By all means when in the area take a full day and spend it at the Carl sanburg Home and National Historic Site, One thing to remember if you have trouble climbing up the drive just pick up the phone and they will come get you or tell you how to drive up"
"The sandwich guy at Starbucks recommended the Sandburg house and we're glad he did. Maybe a half hour outside of Asheville, the house is a Park Service site and very well run and maintained. The walk from the parking lot is really an uphill hike- not for the very young or very old. The videos are di..."fferent from those we saw at Thomas Wolfe or Montpelier because they included footage of Sandburg and his wife. The tour guide (a volunteer) carried a small notebook with her and quoted Sandburg's works from it at appropriate moments during the tour. The house is filled with Sandburg's possessions left just as Lillian left them when she sold it after his death. Look and listen for the June 1967 calendar in Lillian's office in the house- one of the most poignant parts of the tour. A visit to the goats is a must do part of the tour. We saw 10 baby goats and enjoyed learning that they are descended from Lillian's prize winning herd.

"The grounds are lovely, the house tour very interesting and it has been left just as it was when the Sandburg family lived there. Mrs. Sandburg had a goat dairy and this part of the excursion is very nice for children because the lady park rangers encourage touching the animals. Cars are parked at..." the foot of the hill, so be prepared for a short, but steep hike. House tour is $5.00, the rest is free including parking. A mountain gem for sure!
