- BeccaSydney, Australia3 contributionsA must do dive, easy wreck to navigate with a cool upside down tank inside. Go with dive Gizo for a great guided experience and lunch on a desert island!Written 22 October 2019This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Gene R JSilver Spring, MD9,113 contributionsWe arrived at 3 x 6 mile Ghizo Island, Western Province, Solomon Islands as part of our 43 day Maasdam cruise circling Japan to Sydney, Australia. After anchoring, we tendered to this small port of 7,000 with a harbor of colorful fishing boats that today will ferry tourists to reefs and islands(including Kennedy's Plum Pudding).
We turned at the 1st street after the nearby Ghizo Hotel, finding this church standing prominently at the end. Inside the open gate, a woman unlocked the front door, revealing a beautiful wood ceiling, rows of black stenciled white pillars and stained glass clerestory windows, all directing our vision to the altar's large Christ. We saw the caged parrots outside in the small garden before walking on to the new covered market selling local veggies, grape seaweed, clams, and colorful fresh reef fish.
We passed the GR Supermarket, ANZ Bank, and rows of countryside locals displaying their crafts as we returned to the port. Waiting to board our tender, we listened to a costumed chorus singing to the accompaniment of distinctive bamboo drums, making for a unique farewell to PNG.Written 25 September 2019This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. As we were staying at Fatboys Resort, it was easy to arrange tour requests in advance (via Facebook Messenger). A day with 2 dives, including BCD, fins, snorkel, and mask rental was 1200 SBD/per person. Because we were the only two, there was fuel surcharge of 50 SBD each for less than 4 guests. The boat was in excellent condition and the safety of our dive was considered throughout. The dive master led us the entire dive at a very easy pace with minimal water current.
The dive boat was comfortable and we started with a wreck dive of a nearby Japanese supply ship. We dove to 100 feet (30 meters). The tip of the boat was 20 meters deep; so great lighting to see all the details. Many personal effects from the boat still remain.
Lunch was provided on our more than one-hour decompression stop on the charming white sand beach paradise at Njari Conservation island. A simple but tasty and fulfilling lunch was provided along with a jug of water. The island also has several hammocks to chill and nap during a lazy break.
The second dive was at “Grand Central Station,” just a stone’s throw from Njari Island with spectacular healthy coral and abounding underwater life, complete with several black tip reef sharks. We dove to 100 feet (30 meters).
Overall, we thoroughly enjoyed our dive experience with Dive Gizo. They were a safe and enjoyable operator. Special shout out to the dive master and boat operator. And the lovely front desk lady who handled the welcome and payment. Such a wonderful staff.
PRO TIP:
There is a bank with an ATM just 5 minutes walk so you can avoid paying the 3.5%+ credit card fees.
Also, just outside Dive Gizo is a bottle shop where you can stock up on beer and liquor at half the price of your resort.Written 10 February 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
