Linear day hike that takes in some of the best of the Mourne Mountains.
The trail starts in the Meelmore Lodge, where there is secure... more » parking, toilets and showers. Head directly south down a lane and cross a style over the Mourne wall. The trail fiords a river before heading towards the Hares Gap.
Fiord the river again from left to right for a more "interesting" approach to Slieve Bearnagh. Cross the Mourne wall again and then begin a very steep accent up Slieve Bearnagh. Use the Mourne wall as a guide in bad weather, it should be on your left at all times!!
Decent from Bearnagh and pass the Hare's gap. Please note this is a good spot for lunch as there is shelter on both sides of the Mourne Wall.
Follow The Brandy Pad all the way to a sharp right turn near a large cairn. Accend Slieve Beg. Caution is advised as the Devil's Coachroad opens at the summit, a steep gully with nasty cliffs! Descend and steeply ascend Cove Mountain. Excellent Views in all directions on a clear day.
Decend again into the saddle. Head east for about 100-200m until you find a trail. Its not immediately apparent as the saddle can be boggy, but it is there! This track will swing south and lead you towards Annalong Wood.
Follow the trail along the wood back to Carrick Little car park, and hopefully you have not left your keys in Meelmore Lodge. less «
