Your walk to the next shop will take you along the Herengracht, which was the most prestigious canal in the 17th century. As you walk north look to your right across the canal to see some excellent examples of 17th and 18th century Amsterdam canal-side architecture. Notice the heavy lean to the corner house at No. 275. A few doors down at No. 269 you will see a house built in 1656 with a step gable typical of that era.
