Ok, it does look like a 'true castle, the best YHA property', but, unfortunately, it's just the building and a couple of common rooms inside. It stands aside from the main road, so getting there by foot could be a challenge. We got a room with a back view, while the girls' toilets had a magnificent lake view! There are... More

I read in one of the latest reviews rumors that the hostel is closing. I did some resarch on Google and it's sadly true! On the SYHA website I noticed that you can only book rooms until the 24th of September. I wonder why they are closing what they say it's the most beautiful hostel in Scotland and what they... More

My teen sons and I spent one night here in transit to Glasgow. The 19th century "castle" is quite stunning, and many of the original features have been left intact. The grounds are bucolic and it's an easy walk from the bus stop on the adjacent motorway. The self-catering kitchen was large and well-eqipped and staff were appropriately helpful.

Want to stay in a Scottish castle? This youth hostel is in a beautiful 19th century castel with spectacular views over the countryside. The location is great, but after that it is just a youth hostel. The people on duty were very helpful and friendly, and the evening meal and breakfast we had were very nice. But room was nothing... I only just noticed that someone posted that this place is closing! What a shame....it is the most impressive looking youth hostel I've ever stayed in. A Scottish palace with loads of character and atmosphere, mosaic floored lobby, stag heads mounted on the walls, wood panelling and a huge fireplace. It must have been a sumptuous home in its better... More

I have stayed here twice over the last year. I visited last summer during a John O'Groats - Lands End cycle ride, and then I just had to come back and explore the area properly. The Youth Hostel is in a lovely old building not far from the banks of Loch Lomond. Its a bit of a walk from the... More

Never again! This is how we could summarise our stay at Loch Lomond Youth Hostel. Have paid about £50 for twin room which was not worth this price: - we found twin room to be a room with IKEA - like bunk bed for teenagers - small, to small mattresses - dirt, dirt, dirt EVERYWHERE like no cleaners for weeks!... The place is beautifully located and the place looks nice but there were some aspects on which the place were lacking. In particular that you had to book in advance for breakfeast the next morning when all you wanted was serial and toast. Another thing is that we had to leace the hostel between 10 am and 3 pm. This... More

First up, wonderful building and setting. We aren't particularly fussy travellers, but there were some pretty poor aspects: 1. I've stayed in dozens of hostels across the world, and I can't recall being asked to vacate the building between 10am-3pm. Unnecessary, and if I've paid for the room (and not an inconsiderable cost either!) I should be able to come... More

I had stayed here in 1998 with my wife and returned this time with an old friend on a bit of a lads highland adventure. Well, 43+ year old lads that is, if you can give that any credibility in the 'adventure' stakes - more like two brilliantine stick insects trying to relive a youth that has long gone....and failing...
