Tama Ryokan is very well located in Takadanobaba, just two short stops north of Shinjuku in a wonderfully busy, safe and cheap student oriented area.$40 per person per night made a 3 night stay for a family of 4 in Tokyo a viable proposition during our 13 week holiday. Tama Ryokan is an older property just off a Main Street,... More

I stayed in the ryokan for 5 nights in March 13 and the service provided by the owner's wife was exceptional. She even volunteered her son's house (which was an apartment 2 mins walking distance away from the ryokan, situated just beside the subway station) for us to stay in. I can't speak much about the rooms in the ryokan... More

I'm re-posting this review...I was contacted by the owners to fix some errors in my original review, or else have my review removed. Initially, I stated that the Kame Room has no natural light. I would like to correct that to state that factually the room has windows as indicated on website photos. However, my perception and opinion is that... More

To begin where this review ends (which is on an oddly irrelevant note): ukiebride is incorrect when she claims that Japan Rail Passes were usable on "any of our subway rides around Tokyo". If you're on a JR line that passes undergound at some point, you're still not in the subway system, where JR Rail Passes are useless. This restriction... More

Really glad that I chose to stay here at Tama Ryokan on my first trip to Japan. Mrs Turner is an awesome and kind lady and I'm glad to be able to meet her. My friend and I realised only afterwards that we got our timings for checking out wrong and she was kind enough to accommodate to that. (Really... More

I'm so lucky to have stayed with Mr and Mrs Turner in their amazing home in Takadonababa. My thoughts are below: - the location is 3 minutes from the Yamanote station and seconds away from the metro line. It is so convenient to get anywhere in Tokyo from here. The area is by a university and is full of coffee... More

I loved it and highly recommend it! Mrs Turner is lovely and very caring. Mr Turner was very helpful via email and fastly replied to all my questions. The place is super clean, comfortable, quiet, safe, very close to main transport lines (Yamamote line), very good price and it is easy to get there following the instructions on their webpage. It... More

Knowing next to nothing about getting into and around Tokyo, I feel like we got real lucky booking our stay at Tama. It's quiet, cosy and comfortable, the facilities are simple but well kept. Our host Eiko made sure we were looked after from beginning to end (we made two stops at Tama on travels through Japan) and worked tirelessly... More

If this is your first trip to Japan, please be sure to read the "rules" on the Tama web site- think of this as a family home & add both common courtesy and common sense. Don't be surprised if you're asked to wheel your luggage over the mat a few times - it's the same principle as taking your shoes... More

Me and my girlfriend spent a total of 9 nights at Tama Ryokan, and we would most certainly stay there again. The owners are helpful and friendly, and let you have your privacy. After a long day of activity, it was always nice to come "home" to the room for rest. It's a small place, close to the subway, and... More

I felt very welcome coming to this place! And considering what you're paying it's such a good value!! It's about a five minute walk from the station, which has both subway line and the JR Yamanote line. I loved the duvet and the futon, quit big rooms (i was traveling alone tho..) and everything was clean! Would come back and... More
