This monastery inn is excellent. Tatami rooms (no shoes please) and beautiful spaces with great care taken over every detail. Although it gets cold at night, you have you own heater, electric quilt and tea. The highlights include an evening meditation, morning chanting, and outstanding Buddhist vegan food for dinner and breakfast. Not only was it very peaceful and life... More

We arrived in Koya-san around 6pm/7pm and so decided to stay 2 nights, which I think was just a little bit longer that needed, but WHAT AN EXPERIENCE. It isn't cheap (£100 for a room with separate toilet and food is costly), but the room and grounds make up for it. Being Veggie was HARD in Tokyo and Osaka, but... More

After reading about it in our Michelin guide, my wife and I decided to stay one evening at the Rengejoin Temple in Koyasan. We were glad we did! The hospitality, the food, the scenery and the coziness of our room were all reasons we loved Rengejoin Temple. We highly recommend a stay here, especially if you are a vegan or... More

After reading the positive reviews of Koyasan on japan-guide.com, I decided to spent my second night in Japan at Rengejo-in, Mount Koya (booking through Japanese Guest Houses). I was hesitant as, at the time of booking, I do not think that there were any tripadvisor reviews and the temple was my 4th preference, the others being booked out. I was... More

We stayed here a night back in November and we can't gush about it enough. This was the single most extrodinary place we stayed. The temple is old with a lot of history behind it and the monks explained the ceremonies in English as well as Japanese so everyone understood. The food was AMAZING, the best food we had in... More

I stayed one night in Koyasan and it was the first time for me to stay in a traditional japanese house. It is more a hotel whith a temple the a temple with acommodation. I was welcomed very warm and everybody there was so friendly. The rooms are nice and have a heater which is really important in November. The... More

Koya-san – and particularly, the Oku-in Cemetery – is one of the most charming, atmospheric and eerie places to visit in Japan. Its streets, lined with temple complexes and monasteries, are quiet (in early April, at least). The cemetery is vast, a maze of graves and stone torii, covered in moss, shadowed from the sun. We chose to stay overnight... More

Stayed one night at Rengejoin, one of the largest shukubo lodgings in Koya-san, in a mid-level room. Temple facility is large and beautiful, with most rooms surrounding, and having a view of a big central garden. Our tatami room was enormous: enter into big foyer area where the closets for the futons are, past sliding doors into the central room... More

We recently stayed at Renegjo-in for a couple of nights. The rooms are traditional style, with Tatami mat floors and paper screens. This means you are rather dependent upon your neighbours being considerate; luckily ours were. The food is, again, traditional and vegetarian. This can be a little challenging at breakfast... but it's all part of the experience. The highlight... More
