If you enjoy primitive (no electric or water hookup) camping, then this is a great spot. Our kids enjoyed the many encounters with nature (mostly deer). There is a trail to hike up to the amphitheater nearby, which is a perfect distance if you happen to have a toddler like we do. The showers are a bit of a trek... More

On a whim, we decided to drive to SNP the Sunday before Memorial Day. Crazy- I know. We left the DC area after dinner and made it to the Front Royal entrance before sunset. We figured...We would either just enjoy a beautiful sunset or...if we were lucky... we would get to enjoy a night of camping. We had called ahead... More

I am giving this 4 stars instead of 5 only because this campground is a little more off the beaten path. However, there is plenty to do around here and a lot of campers like being off the beaten path from all of the crowds. Big Meadows and Skyland are the most travelled to areas in the park, so just... We stayed an SNP for 2 midweek nights in June 2012 and had a nice stay. We had just come from 4 nights in DC and were on our way to Kentucky. We were at site A10A. This was an excellent campsite. It was adjacent to the Appalachian Trail (AT) so there were occasional passers-by. It was quiet at night... More

I booked spot A10A over 3 months in advance - booked in June for a 1 night stay in October! After reading reviews, site A10A seemed to be the best and in high demand. We arrived right at noon and went straight to the site to set up. The site was a 20 second walk from the car down a... More

This is a great campground and well maintained, no hook-ups. Some sites have good privacy others are marginal. Having stayed here a few times while hiking the AT, it appears to me this is a playground (the entire SNP for that matter) for over-civilized Northern Virginia & DC trolls with their poorly disciplined, brat children. Avoid this place on the... More

we stayed here 2 nights after reading reviews. we arrived on a monday evening-october with drizzling rain. except for the A10B site, we had our pick of the place. we could have stayed in A10a; but ran the risk of having to vacate by noon the next day if it had been reserved. So we opted for A10d because it... More

Fantastic sites for tents. Nicely private with access to the most astonishing sunsets off of you own private cliff. A herd of deer set up camp around my tent as I was returning down the hill from my car. I was able to walk down to the Appalachian Trail from my site and sit on a rock and catch the... More

Having stayed at all of the SNP campgrounds north of Loft Mountain, I believe none compare to this setting and we take the extra drive every time now to get here. You can truly find seclusion, or no seclusion, depending on what you want. Intermittent valley views from a handful of sites, and especially from the campfire bowl. Temperatures are... More

We haven't been camping in forever but decided it was time and we had heard Loft Mountain was a great place! I agree- many sites are private- you are not on top of each other and the Appalachian Trail is right there- breath taking views seconds from you! We saw three bear two miles from the campground on Skyline Drive!... More
