Of the 10 places we stayed in S Africa on our trip, this was the only place that was disappointing. It has faded grandeur and the staff were much less welcoming than in all the other places. Elephant House truly takes you off the R335, and transforms you into another world. They really nailed it with the ambience of the courtyards, lounges and guest rooms. The dining spaces are romantic, and the food is excellent. They have their own jeep and extremely knowledgeable tour guide for safaris into Addo Elephant National Park. Not everyone will 'get' this place. Clive and his team have recreated a bygone age of empire and faded colonial grandeur. Massive seating areas everywhere, informal dining arrangements, fixed choice menu all go to make up a 'home in the jungle' feel. We had two nights last week at the Elephant House. Clive and the team were most welcoming and we (two couples from England) loved every minute there. The cleverly thought out ambience of a colonial past was perectly recreated and gave a good impression of how things must have been, with old photographs, enormous settes and armchairs etc and plenty... It was unusual to find ourselves staying in a converted stable but it was well done giving us a large and comfortable lodge. The service was first class, the breakfast was excellent and I even went out in the morning to find my car had been washed.

What a fantastic place. Rustic, but a very relaxing place. Cottages are massive, nice veranda and a wonderful sense of space. Food was out of this world! Highly recommend the elephant house and the stable cottages. we stayed 3 nights at the beginning of our garden route trip and wished we could of stayed longer. Staff so helpful, great location... More
