When choosing a place to stay for my first solo St. Maarten trip, it was a tough call between this boutique hotel and a large resort. However, the price, 5 star reviews, and overall value made it seem like a no-brainer. When staying here, it’s important to keep your expectations realistic. It’s an older establishment, so don’t expect glitz and glamour. Instead, expect a scrupulously clean (albeit slightly dated) room with a fabulously comfortable bed and eclectic decor, combined with a location literally on the sand of Simpson Bay Beach. The rooms are small but well-equipped. The owner, Mike, greets you like a friend who finally came for a much-anticipated visit to his home. For instance, there is a notice inside the room with a lot of helpful information, including the fact that you can request a 1:00 p.m. checkout. Unfortunately, I never ran into Mike again before checkout day, and when I arrived back at my room at 10:45, the housekeeper was outside waiting. Another guest was due in my room, so it was impossible for me to stay there until 1. I still needed a shower and to pack. When Mike came out, he graciously gave me another room for the extra two hours. Wow! That would NEVER happen at a large resort. I was incredibly grateful. Fantastic customer service! The hotel is right on the sand of a public beach. I was in the beach suite, which meant I had to walk through sand to get to my room. Just something to be aware of if you are mobility impaired. There was no other route to the room. I think the other room facing the water was the same way, but I’m not sure. Also, in the evenings there were always locals right there at the hotel beach chairs, and on them at times. Most were couples looking for a quiet place to enjoy the evening, but a few seemed tipsy. No one made me feel threatened, but as a solo traveler on this trip, I was cautious. Just be aware of your surroundings, like anywhere else. Summing it all up, it was a great experience. Nothing is more soothing than to hear waves hitting the shore when you’re drifting off to sleep. I highly recommend this fun place to stay on St. Maarten.…
