Clean, quirky, full of interesting photos, books and ephemera. Just over half a mile from the town centre (steep walk but very pretty). Breakfast very nice with leaf tea and local ingredients. This hotel has a fabulous location, 5 mins walk from beach and 15 mins from the centre. Our room was spacious and clean with lovely views; however these were the only pluses. You walk into Hawthorne Dene Hotel, an old Victorian house.... and you're hit with old Victorian... mixed with 70's and 80's decor. We had 4 rooms, all of which were clean and well presented. The style of the decor suited the style and character of the building. Staff were helpful and obliging when we arrived a few hours early. The Hawthorne Dene has a lot of character and was in a good location for the wedding we were attending. Very fussy decor, trying too hard with rooms named after teddies, and a toy with a message on the bed. Quite a way out of town if you're on foot, with an uphill walk back. Very nice breakfast, free range ingredients. More
