I stayed in the "Cathedral room" and found the room as expected in a 15th centenary building. the bed was comfy perfect location for central Canterbury . this is under new ownership and things are being changed and refurbished but there was no inconvenience to myself. as this is a rear room which face's the Cathedral the bells didn't bother... It was our second stay in Canterbury and this time we wanted to stay somewhere really central to avoid driving in ever so hectic Canterbury- Cathedral Gate Hotel seemed a perfect choice. We stayed 4 nights in one of their newly refurbished double en suite and well I say what a treat! The standard of the finish is more of... More

I was worried by all the reviews, but we had a pleasant stay. All the criticisms are either addressed or being addressed. There is laminate in the dining room, cheese has been added to the breakfast menu, the view is spectacular of the cathedral, (bells muffled). The bedrooms are being refurbished.Yes, there was a litle noise from the pub across the square ,but it stopped... I stayed in the "Cathedral" room, which was a rickety floored single, with a lovely window view straight onto the Cathedral, and a chair and table conveniently by the window so I could enjoy the view. It was very comfortable -- lovely crisp cotton sheets and duvet, openable window, and reading lights where I needed them. The staff were wonderful:... More

Stayed in the "Repose" room, a generous double for our anniversary. Love the sense of history in this place, it's very quirky with many beautiful original features. We were well looked after and loved the fact that breakfast was even brought to our room in the morning! Shared shower facilities were fine as we were expecting this, and it meant... More

We booked & paid for a room in this hell hole in March 2013 for 1 night at the cost of £112.50 without seeing the room first, on arrival when we were shown to our room ( called 'JOY') what a [--] small & looked like had been furnished out of a junk shop & with no propper shower just... More

Filthy, smelly and vile. Zero customer service. My wife wouldn't venture into the shower it was so grimy like the room. One of the most expensive rooms we've stayed in but far the worst. Sleeping in the car is probably a better idea.

Dear Guest, Thank you for your comments. Firstly, I’m very sorry to hear that you didn’t enjoy your stay. Secondly, I’d like to acknowledge the validity of your complaint. The Cathedral Gate Hotel is over 500 years old and yes, some areas of the hotel certainly do show their age. That being noted, the Cathedral Gate has recently had a... More

Didn't enjoy at all! All the building and especially the room were too old not maintained and very dirty. Not clean and let all the furniture get old is not vintage is disgusting. The bed was almost falling apart all the time you were sitting on it and the mattress absolutely uncomfortable, I woke up with a bed back pain.... More

Good Lord, the worst hotel I ever seen in my life, it's a shame that a city like Canterbury has an appalling hostel like this. The room was filthy, filthy, filthy my dog won't like to stay there. The breakfast was cereal, cheap croissants, juice, jam ??? One has to pay extra for full English breakfast and to book it... More

The so called Cathedral gate hotel is no more than a terrible & run down hostel! I paid above a hundred pounds for a room with torn carpets, no heating and terrible noise nighttime, I found no staff at 1 am to complain. Unless it was one night, I would complain to the trade standard agency, the council.
