Driving past we noticed the hotel and its sign saying open to non-residents. We'd been out walking so the thought of tea and sandwiches in pleasant surroundings would be just the ticket. As we are currently thinking about wedding venue options - this was also in our minds. I can't say we were welcomed with open arms as it was... More

Stayed here on a 1 night and dinner deal at the end of our holiday in the lake district. The hotel is an old house, with nice gardens, right on the shores of lake Ullswater with beautiful views of the mountains. There are some rooms in the main house, but we stayed in the Garden Rooms (a short distance from... More

"Thin and Dry" answered the waitress when asked if the kippers were thin and dry or juicy and fat. Such honesty is to be commended. That said, the kipper that passed the table later looked pretty good although I was delighted by the traditional cooked breakfast and separate offering of black pudding. The setting, next to Ullswater, dominates this hotel... More

We stayed there for two nights and had a wonderful time. From the minute you step into your room, it's like time has stopped. The decor is a bit outdated but feels very quaint. The food in the restaurant was lovely and service was outstanding. Nothing was too much trouble and everyone was very efficient. More

This was our first visit to The Sharrow Bay, we'd heard good reports from friends who visited in the 70's and 80's !! and after 30 years we finally made it up here ourselves. No accommodation booked, just the most delicious 3 course lunch for the two of us. The sun was shining, so we had a drink with appetisers... More

Had a lovely Sunday lunch here again, this time for my birthday. The weather was stunning as is the location of this hotel. Staff were attentive and the food was wonderful. Yes, I agree that the hotel does need updating, but it does not detract from the food or the location. More

Room was spacious and beautifully furnished. Several comfortable sitting rooms. Food choice and quality was of the highest standard. Staff managed the balance between being attentive without being overbearing. We couldn't fault any aspect of our stay. More

Have just returned from a one night stay and dinner to celebrate my husband's birthday. We LOVED it, but can appreciate it may not be to everyone's taste. If you prefer chic, minimalist, faceless corporate chains then this is not the place for you, but after reading the reviews we went with an open mind, determined to enjoy ourselves, and... More

We spent a long weekend at the Sharrow Bay hotel on Ullswater recently, for us this is a much loved hotel, we have been visiting this place for nearly 25 years. We knew Brian Sack and Frances Coulson the two lovely gentlemen who started this, the first country house hotel here on Ullswater towards the end of their careers. Most... More
