I stayed at this hotel for one night while passing through Edinburgh. I really appreciated the personal service of the owner by email and even staying up late to check me in given my late flight into Edinburgh. Rooms are simple. I had a single room with a shared bathroom. Never had a problem using the bathroom and it was... More

Although the "superior" room and its private bathroom had obviously been recently refurbished, inexplicalby they didn't think of putting a connecting door in; not only that, the room door has a closing mechanism, which means it is forced shut with a bang while the bathroom door handle came off - the photos on the website of the room and the... It's not a hard 10 minutes walk into the city centre, and the place is clean and tidy. Breakfast spread was decent, a bit disappointed that the bathroom for the Superior Room is not ensuite. there is a small kitchen where you can prepare meals or make an extensive breakfast if you want to. There's also free wifi!

It is not often that I stay in a guest house, and hotel prices in Edinburgh seemed outrageous to me, so I thought I'd take the opportunity to stay in a gay place. When I arrived, Martin, the owner, showed me to my room and explained the various bars in the city. I had a large single room without bath,... More

ARRIVING - I walked from the airport bus stop (at Waverley Station) until Alva Place (15 Minutes). I knew exactly the way because I checked it at google-maps before. But ALVA PLACE is the name of the building, not the street. I went first to the wrong street (also Alva Place) und could not find the number 45. Then I... More

My partner and I recently stayed at Alva House on our way to see family elsewhere in Scotland. As I have stayed here before I knew a little about rhe place. It is a Gay guesthouse, but it is not cheap, nasty or sexually orientated. Let me start by saying that this is the best value for money B&B in... More

The headline says it all really. The interior is understated and tasteful. I stayed in the single room, which was a perfect size, with basin in room. Breakfast was help-yourself in the kitchen, and had everything you might want. The only complaint I would mention is that the shower pressure in the shared bathroom is really poor. But other than... My partner and I recently stayed at Alva House and overall were very pleased with the 3 nights we stayed there. The booking process via email with the owner was very polite and efficient and location, 10 mins walk to Princes St was good. Yes the bathroom is shared but at £49 a night in a city centre I think... Stayed here recently - just a 10 minute walk away from Princes Street etc. - the room was very spacious and well-appointed and the owner very welcoming and friendly and informative about the local area. Didn't mind that the private bathroom was next door to the bedroom as you feel that you always have your privacy. I really enjoyed staying... More
