Although the Rock is in need of a little TLC, my wife and I enjoyed our stay very much. The staff were helpful in general and we very much enjoyed the peace and quiet of the hotel. The restaurant was slightly pricey, however the food was good. The bar staff were excellent and very friendly, although they did have a... More

Such a shame, this hotel has such potential. Although looking shabby round the edges, the hotel had a lovely ambience but the service was just so poor. When we arrived it was raining and we were greeted at reception with “oh no the weather is not going to clear up and the forecast is the same for tomorrow!” – a... More

Just had a full week at the Rock Hotel. My wife and I had a great time. Yes things have changed since we first stayed there in 1999 some for the worse but on the whole I'd say more for the better. Some of the nice touches like the whiskey and sherry in room have gone but the prices haven't... More

This hotel needs a lot of money spent on it to bring it back to anywhere close to a 5 star standard. Both public areas and rooms are tatty at best - paint peeling off walls, threadbare carpets and curtains (we were missing a number of curtain rings although our friends were missing a whole curtain!), chipped skirting boards, damp... Just returned from my 8th stay in 9 years, unfortunately Im not sure if it may be the last. I love this hotel, it has a charm about it that I have not found anywhere else. But... it is going downhill, when I first started stayin here there were many little extras, sherry on arrival, Whiskey ahd Sherry in the... More

This is our second stay here having felt this old lady was worthy of a second viewing. We too were told with numerous others the rooms were not ready. Surprising really as guest are asked to leave by 11am and we and three other couples didnt arrive till 1pm. Also, although we actually have no idea how many guests are... More

Dear Delia P, Thank you for taking the time to contribute. Regarding check-in and rooms being available I would simply refer you to a previous response as my answer would be the same. I can assure you that the hotel has been extremely buoyant. The Rock, with its large public areas can often be seen as void of clientele but... More

We stayed 3 nights here at the end of May and am pleased to say I was very impressed with all aspect of the hotel and staff. The room and view was good. Based on some of the other comments contained here I was anticipating some level of decorative issues, this was not the case and the rooms and contents... More

Dear Ian M, Thank you for your contribution. Your comments regarding our staff are much appreciated and about our pool staff in particular, as they are a totally new team this year. I am glad that you felt we had "charm" and that you are looking forward to a return visit. Thank you once more. More

On arrival we were offered a glass of sherry and then told that our room wasn't ready. This is odd as the hotel must know when the flights come in (they all land within 30 mins of each other!). However, you can leave your luggage at reception for the porter to take to your rooms whilst you aquaint yourselves with... More

Dear Garethsd1, Thank you for taking the time to write such an informative and precise review. Regarding rooms not being ready I am afraid that this isn't based on our knowledge of flight times but on the fact that our departing guests can occupy their rooms until mid-day as many do, and of course our levels of occupancy the night... It has an attractive feel of decaying grandeur which is not at all unpleasant. The public rooms are nice, spacious and attractively furnished. The rooms are too, although they are in need of refurbishment. The bathroom was cramped and very old fashioned although everything worked appropriately. Room led onto a huge unattractive balcony, but it had a nice view and... More

Dear Greenpen, Our impending investment will negate all your comments as far as decor and infrastructure are concerned. I was concerned to read your comments about breakfast, which is a fully loaded hot and cold English and continental buffet style of some proportion. I am also sorry that you found our bar depressing as usually the terrace and bar, with... More

Arrived tired and fraught (read over it all) at midnight and were in the room within 10 minutes with bags delivered... and what a view of the harbour!.A series of plastic ducks in the bath (deep, lots of hot water), tea and coffee, terrific beds- what more does anyone need? The apes are a bit of a problem, and tried... More

Dear Pittosporum, Thank you for your review. It's a pleasure to have welcomed a customer from 'down-under'. Although you are so far away I do hope that we have the opportunity of welcoming you back to the Rock one day. Thank you once more. More

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Built on Gibraltar's western flank with stunning views across the bay, it has been welcoming guests since 1932. As the colony’s premier hotel the guest book is littered with famous names as diverse as Sir Winston Churchill and the Two Ronnies! Tastefully renovated, it has the character of a bygone era with the facilities of a modern 'Grand Hotel'. Traditional afternoon tea is served in the lounge and the hotel’s Rib Room Restaurant is recognised as one of the finest places to dine in Gibraltar. The atmospheric Barbary Bar and adjoining wisteria covered terrace are wonderful places to be on a summer’s evening, both are delightful meeting places, the latter a popular venue for weddings. The hotel’s pool area and gardens have an air of tranquillity, yet the centre of town is only a 10-minute downhill walk. ... more   less
