To get to your hotel – 2 choices. Pay the taxi man 45 SWF for a 10-15 min journey to your hotel. OR pay nothing (if you have an official hotel reservation) and take FREE public transport. The bus you want will come in a few minutes, it’s the ’50 SBB Bannhoff’. Stay on it until you get to the... More

Alexander is the cheapest of the hotels near to Basler Messe (exhibition square), and a reasonable option for a short business visit. It's clean, everything works, free wifi, but the main reason for staying is the cost, about half that of nearby alternatives. Aim to get a single room for no more than CHF90. Buffet breakfast is included in the... More

We stayed 2 nights at the Alexander which has been awarded 3 stars. Usually in Switzerland 3-star hotels are very reasonable. This one is an old establishment which has been refurbished but with very little soul. The rooms are very austere and the renovation leaves you with pieces of furniture in which you will knock your head or other essential... More

Yes this hotel is run down, but it is clean and really cheap for Basel. We paid £60 a night through Octopus. The breakfast is an all you can eat continental (cereal, yougurt, meat, cheese, breads, oj and coffee) and was really nice. The hotel includes a free ''Basel Mobility'' pass so all your travel on the trams are free!... More

I simply can't recommend this hotel, we stayed here as part of a larger party with a major coach operator in the NW of England. The room was clean recently refurbished to some extent but still tatty. The bar really was more of a disco and there's nowhere to sit other than in your room and then on hard chair.... More

Comfortable hotel. We were looking for a single night stop between Paris and the Valais so the fact this was quite a long way from the centre was not a problem. Using the tram was better than taxi. The restaurant was good with traditional cuisine. More

Located close to the new cultural center, this is an older hotel with small, dark rooms and very expensive amenities (the norm for Switzerland). The staff was helpful and Internet was free and fast, plus given how expensive everything is here it is a good deal but don't expect much. The windows do an okay job of soundproofing but the... More

The rooms were fairly small but clean, the furniture was tatty and could do with being updated.Breakfast was ok served in a pleasant dining room. The staff were not overly friendly but when we told them that the hair dryer & one of the lights were not working they were soon replaced. Thanks to the review by gwgw Sept 16th 2007... More

Booked through Octopustravel.com. The hotel was listed as a 3-star, but doesn't quite come off this way. The property is a family-run tourist class hotel located directly across from the Messe Tower and Convention Center area. The hotel is easy to find, as its a pink building on a relatively short street, about 2 short blocks from the Messeplatz tram... More

Spent a good week at the Alexander, two minor irritations: 1. Could do with tea/coffee facilities in the bedrooms. 2. Restaurant has good Swiss food, but no choice for those staying half-board, you had to have what you where given. Staff VERY pleasant, helpful. There was a 'bug' going around the city, a number of guests got it, plus staff,... More
