The Monasterium Poortackere is a unique and special hotel in the heart of Ghent. Just minutes away from the historical centre in this bustling city lies a beautiful retreat housed in a former monastery. My husband and I booked a superior room in the Breedhuis after viewing the accomodations online, but upon arrival we decided to pay to upgrade our... More

In beautiful Ghent you will find this hotel and guesthouse near the historical center. It is an ok solution. I stayed at the guesthouse, and Got a room ón the second floor, in a very Dark hallway. I asked Them to fix the light, and when it was not done they gave ne another room without too Much discussion. Some... More

This is a hotel unlike any other I've ever stayed in. It's not easy to find (but sick to the hotel's directions and you"ll be fine), the receptionist is friendly in the evening, grumpy and simply overstretched in the morning, rooms are huge with more than a whiff of the early 1950s (and not much heating power than a VW... We booked two rooms at this hotel, one for us as a couple, and another for a single friend. On arrival, we were very concerned about the general state of the place, it looked dark, dingy and old. We were first shown to our friends room which was up a very small set of stairs which was in desparate need... More

I stayed here for a sense of the monastic life, and now I know why the nuns at school were always so cranky! There is a range of accommodation with appropriate pricing, with spartan lodging for a budget price. Spartan rooms do not appeal to everyone, but those of us on tight budgets distressed by lousy exchange rates are grateful... More

I am American, and was visiting on business as a gospel musician. My fingers swelled from jet lag, so I placed my ring in its velvet box and left it on top of my suitcase as I went to bed. The next morning I rushed to my first press engagement, and forgot to hide my ring, as the chambermaid entered... More

Stayed at the Poortackere as part of a business group for one night. Found that the elevator reaches only till a certain level, after that you have to haul your luggage over wooden steps! Room was farly large but not very clean. Bathroom is old and needs renovation. Though they want to offer the austerity of a monastery, it needs... More

Previous reviewers have given this hotel sometimes a rather negative evaluation. We booked rooms there with some trepidations, but since the building had been a monastery many years ago, I wanted to stay there because I led a group of students researching the Middle Ages. It was not quite easy to find the entrance to the reception, but from then... More

This place is out of the ordinary, not standard. It may not suit everyone as it is quirky and quaint. It needs work to upgrade some of the décor, but all the essentials were there. except an iron? There was a separate ironing room which seemed a bit weird, but I did say it was quirky. Ideal as a conference... More

Poortackere has the potential to be a fantastic venue, but sadly not a lot of effort has gone into upkeeping and bringing the building up to today's standards. Perhaps we should have been warned by the hotel's name: a monastery houses those who renounce wordly pursuits. The room (Maagdenvleugel) we had definitely reflected that idea. Very basic comfort, dirty and... More
