We have not been for two years but the Puma group have improved the hotel since the last visit. In particular the staff were very helpful and the food was a lot better than the last time. The beds were most comfortable ( room 304 ) and there were obvious signs of money being spent throughout. We shall certainly come... More

This is not the first time that I have stayed here and the new management seems to be OK. I was put in a room at the far end of the corridor outside a fire door. There were strange noises that sounded like dripping and noise from other areas. The internet was also weak. The room was reasonable with tea... More

Stayed for 2nights DB&B and food was excellent and well presented - all 3 courses. Room overlooking town even in bad weather the view was lovely. Comfy super king bed and refurbished bathroom - what's not to like. Built in 1888 what do others expect! We expected a bit creaky and some bits faded but that's the charm of the... More

In contrast with some of your other reviewers, we have nothing but praise and admiration for our room (number 207) which must have been recently refurbished. Both the room and the bed were large and comfortable and the window overlooked the town and beyond. Some of the public areas were indeed a little worn but this didn't particularly concern up.... Booked this for 1 night through Travelzoo, we found it excellent value for money. At check in we got an upgrade to a suite which was very spacious, in some areas it is a little dated but this adds to the charming homely feel. The staff were all very friendly and polite. We had evening dinner and breakfast which was... More

This hotel must have been very elegant in its heyday. Unfortunately it has been allowed to become somewhat run down. The beautiful high ceilings need repainting as does much of the décor. The restaurant and bar staff were very friendly and efficient. The girl on reception was not. The sandwiches at lunch were very good but the evening menu was... More

There are areas, mainly the ceilings in public areas that are evidence of its past magnificence. The remaining are desperate for refurbishment showing signs of water ingress in many places. Our bedroom had its en-suite in a corner of the room and had used the minimum amount of floor area. Someone of a large stature would find the bathroom a... More

Several reviews have commented about the faded grandeur of this fine old building, and I have to agree. Some aspects of the stay - for a 2-day workshop - were excellent (the bar and waiting staff, the facilities for the group etc) but others not. I see from the feedback that there is an on-going renovation scheme for the rooms,... More

The 'Grand Dame' of Buxton is a very impressive building overlooking the town and on first glance is very impressive but it has clearly had its day. On closer inspection you can see that this beautiful old building is getting very tired and worn on the inside. The large reception area has a huge staircase but when you look at... More

After reading the previous reviews, must agree. Rooms very very tired. Dire in fact. We overlooked shabby roofs, very dark, hot room. Double bed very small. En-suite, no bath! So small couldn't fit both of us in at the same time. Decor in en-suite yuk!!! Furniture shabby, scratched, lamp shade had stains all over it, wallpaper hanging off. Door to... More
