Great facilities and views of Whangarei from hillside location. Comfy beds. Friendly management both times I've stayed here. Quiet and best if you have a car as it is uphill and quite a walk from the town centre. Would definitely stay there again.

Just stayed here 5 nights and I've not experienced so many Mosquitos in one area.! Ok it's been a hot dry summer but sitting out (or even inside) of an evening and the insects get troublesome. Flies seemed attracted and maybe the estuary lower down the hill effected a good breeding ground? My room (1) had a fly screen affixed... More

Downside is that this youth hostel is situated up on the hill about 10-15 minutes walk from most of the bus operators who service town. Upside is that the hostel is in a nice quiet surburban street with good views over town. It only has a small number of rooms so that it is easy to get to use the... More

Clean rooms, kitchen and facilities, and friendly staff with excellent local knowledge. It is close to town and has great views over the town basin. A really nice backpackers with some excellent walks close by.

Andy and all her staff have always been very helpful. They welcome everybody into this hostel like it's there home. You won't be disappointed when you stay here. Great view of the city at night and centrally located.

My friend and I drove from Auckland up the east coast of Northland, down the west coast and back. We stayed here the first night of our road trip and thought it was so cozy and welcoming, not to mention the great nighttime view of the city below. The lady at the front desk was super nice and gave us... More

What impressed me the most about the Whangarei YHA was the staff. It is run by a full-time manager, rather than young travelers. This gave the place a much more professional feel. The manager set us up with a map and directions to to the local waterfalls and glow worms, and even assisted us with a mistaken double booking at... More

Really lovely little hostel, big enough to meet people, small enough to enjoy it. Staff were great, gave loads and loads of local information on sights and activities. The hostel was one of the cleanest i've ever stayed in. The dried herbs in the kitchen were great and the fresh herbs in the garden were just a bonus.

The host was excellent and introduced guests to each other so they could go on a walk to see glow worms. A nice touch. The kitchen was good, but the sitting room could use a couple more chairs. The rooms were clean and well kept. It gives YHAs a good name.
