What a magnificent building this hotel is. Colonial French design combines with Arab decor to create unsurpassed potential. Such a pity, then, that its service and overall management are so poor. The hotel is government-owned and managed, which presumably explains the lack of maintenance and general service fatigue. Without a doubt this is the best hotel in Algiers, unless you prefer the Hilton isolation or the Aurassi's socialist architecture. El-Djazair (formerly St George) has stunning architecture, magnificent old-style internal design, good location, excellent security if you're concerned with that.
