I have stayed at the Va'oto Lodge 4 times, twice in the late '90s and again last year and this, each time for 3-4 weeks. Each time I also had a group of 7 or more students with me (conducting archaeological research on the island, especially on the lodge property). Vaoto Lodge is an incredible experience. Very difficult to get to these days but well worth the time and effort!! Since air service to Ofu has been discontinued you'll need to cross over from Ta'u with local fishermen (Tom or Lofi at the airport in Ta'u can help you and even find arrange a place for you to stay in... Ofu is a great place to lose yourself. There isn’t a lot to do except relax, read and snorkel, and it doesn’t get any better! Vaoto Lodge is definitely the place to stay while at Ofu. I just got back from an awesome weekend on Ofu which included a stay at Vaoto Lodge. There really is something to be said for a place that is family run and managed.
