This was my first time to Africa, and I wasn't sure what to expect. I was looking for an affordable place to stay and where I could volunteer as well. I HIGHLY recommend staying here because it was a great way to get connected to the projects, meet really friendly fellow travelers, and everyone who works at the hostel is... More

My girlfriend and I stayed at Ujamaa Hostel in a double room for 1 night in early January 2013 before departing for safari. Obviously communal toilets/showers is not something we would usually go for but we were clearly informed of the fact and the facilities were clean and showers had hot water. At the time we were there, there weren't... More

I stayed at the Ujamaa Hostel back in November 2012 and would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a homely, good value place to stay in Arusha. The dorms are clean and spacious (plus there are private rooms for those that want them) and the breakfasts and dinners (all included in the cost) are fantastic. What really makes Ujamaa... More

Absolutely amazing place to stay. Feels just like staying at a mate's place! Everybody was wonderful, the food divine, the rooms spotlessly clean, staff friendly. I stayed with my two boys who loved kicking the soccer ball around and made friends with everyone. It was a breath of fresh air to come home to at the end of a hot,... More

Absolutely loved my time at Ujamaa Hostel - I was there 2 weeks and I felt right at home. Met such incredible people and the mamas there are just magic - they look after you so well and cook delicious dinners. I would definitely recommend staying at this hostel - I felt safe, welcomed and just couldn't fault the place... More

I would recommend this hostel hands down. I wasn't staying there originally, but all the staff were extremely friendly and helpful to me anyway as I made friends with some of the guests. Therefore I decided to stay for a full weekend in the hostel. It is clean and tidy and the beds are really comfortable. The food served for... More

Ujamaa in an extraordinary place. It's friendly staff and helpful guests love to share and tell you all about their time here. The food is fantastic, and the hostel is kept clean and tidy. There's a beer fridge, which is a must after a hot day. Best of all it offers free volunteer experiences for those who want to enhance... More

Just go there. I would rather stay there than a 'luxury' hotel in Arusha. (First off, you won't find 'luxury', and secondly, what the hell are you in East Africa for?! sitting in some lame hotel or meeting awesome people who are helping out around the Arusha community) I didn't volunteer or anything, I just showed up and drank beer,... Secure, friendly, clean, well-run, close to town, great value, food is delicious and the mamas are adorable. You'd be demented to stay anywhere else. As I'm being forced to write 200 characters I suppose I should tell you my life story. My name is Brian, but from an early age everyone called me Steve. When I asked them to stop... More

Some stay a night and some stay for months but everyone is welcome. Ujamaa is like a family and staff will show you around town and projects on your first day and there are always new travellers of all ages and nationalities to chat to and always a beer in the fridge!
