Stayed two nights as part of a 2.5 week Japan trip in Nov '07. The cottage rooms (ones with western beds) are awful! Very worn, dusty, not clean. The curtains had mold on them - really!
The rooms in the main building are more traditional and in better shape.
The Nikko area is outstanding, but don't get a cottage room...
