We stayed two nights We traveled with our two small children and we truly enjoyed very much our experience from the "family bathroom" to the wonderful Kaseiki dinner. Even our 2 and 4 years old had a "bento" box from heaven! The highlight was the dinner served,a real gem: from the service to the apperance up to the taste! The... More

Booked here in January'12 (when another, Rakuyo-So-Inn not available). We were in the CITY, after all, and found this location to be ideal and convenient. Once inside, it was an excellent experience (obviously without some of larger group baths or mineral baths of the countryside Ryokan we visited years before) The soaking tub was drawn hot and ready before we... Traveled by myself to absorb a true Kyoto Ryokan experience. My one-day stay was an amazing experience that can be described as stylish, tasteful, warm and exceptional. Beautiful traditional designed room with some current comforts and relaxing views over the Japanese garden, warm hospitality by the owner/host and an elderly family member whom has worked for decades in the business.... I decided to visit Kyoto in early April on short notice. Ryokan availability was understandably tight and the search was complicated by single occupancy and the requirement of a private bathroom. After a few days of frantic correspondences, it emerged that Kanamean Nishitomiya could offer a suitable room. Having read the reviews here, it was impossible to make a reservation... More

This place is all about charging for, but not providing an authentic Japanese ryokan experience. The Kanamean owners are riding the wave of ryokan popularity, pretending to be up to the same standard, but absolutely are not. This is not an old ryokan, nor do they employ traditional "Kyoto Kaiseki" chefs. The food is amateurish, non-traditional, virtually inedible. I am... More

We made the MISTAKE of believing the Michelin guide that this is a top ryokan with first class Kaiseki food. We moved to Kanamean halfway through our stay in Kyoto, having stayed during the first half at a fabulous, authentic and very clean ryokan with top Kaiseki food. What a mistake this was. We knew it the moment we entered... More

Highly recommended for friendly staff, wonderful very traditional food and a central location. Could not have been better. No bargain but you do get what you pay for and in this case a good deal more. The kindness and thoughtful attitude of the husband and wife owners was really quite breathtaking.

We were referred to this ryokan by another which was fully booked due to student trip week. We finalized our booking before we read the reviews on Tripadvisor, which was mixed. Still, we went ahead and glad we did. It's a small ryokan but beautifully appointed in a very Japanese way. Figurines of garden gnomes and spirits dotted the ryokan... More

this is NOT an old ryokan, it was built in the 80s, the 1980s and it shows. the bathrooms, important in the ryokan experience, have a nice wooden tub, but otherwise are normal japanese bathrooms. of course i am all for having a real toilet, but i would also have liked the all wood and stone bathroom, cedar clad. not... Me and my two adults sons traveled to Japan . In Kyoto we´ve stayed at KAMAMEAN ryokan and we loved it! The owners are so kind, gentle and helpful, it was a pleasure to be there. Everything was so nice, the ambiance, a beautiful japanese room with tatamis but yet with all the amenities and a ofuro bath . The... More
