The location is very beautiful with a great view.
The taki bar is awesome, the food is very fresh and delicious! Totally loved it!
The room is very small and noisy and we could not figure out how the shower works to get hot water...and on booking.com it says and shows it had an infinity pool but once we came there they told us it was only if you rent a villa. A bit misleading...

We stayed here for 6 nights and found it quite nice. It isn’t walking distance to town and you are up a hill so you get stuck eating here for dinner unless you have transport. Food is pretty good but not a huge variety for dinner but it’s cheap enough. It has a lovely pool/ bar area where you can look for birds or just enjoy the ambience. The restaurant staff are super, we felt like part of the family. You are very close to La Fortuna waterfalls too.

This was our 1st stop in Costa Rica and I fell in love! The villa was very private, with a private pool and an amazing view. If and when I return to Costa Rica this will definitely be a place to revisit. Great place and very clean. Amazing and romantic place to stay!

This "resort" is not what it advertises. Seriously, if you go by the pictures, you are straight-up being catfished. It reminded us of hot tub time machine, like it was in it's prime decades ago but has not been touched or cared for since. Our original room, # 3 was covered in black mold. I mean - it was on every surface, every wall, even the hair dryer cord. Some mold was clearly painted over and the mold had come back through. We brought this to the attention of the staff but there was nothing they could do the first night. I have asthma and sinus issues so I had to sleep in the car. The next morning they were helpful and gave us a bigger, slightly cleaner (but still moldy) room. The only reason I gave this 2 stars is because the staff did take action by getting us a better room, even though they reminded me over and over it's the rain forest so I should expect humid conditions. I am pretty tolerant of "not so nice" accommodations but that doesn't mean anyone should tolerate sleeping in dangerous conditions. Not really my idea of "well-being"
Overall the resort looks like at one point they tried the eco and wellness route but they just gave up years ago. We walked around to the "greenhouses" and they were just old tattered buildings with no plants. There were no gardens, no animals, it was just sad.
Perhaps the villas are better like some of the reviews say but don't stay in the main lodging area, seriously you will regret it.

This place is not as advertised! I booked a “2 bedroom villa with a pool” not only is there no private pool but their isn’t even 2 bedrooms. The photos are totally misleading. They have a bedroom upstairs and in the bottom they have 2 beds beside the kitchen and dinning table all in the same room. We booked the villa and paid $245 US. I travelled with my girlfriend and 4month old baby. We walked in saw a huge lizard on the wall, spiders in every corner and for the brief moment we sat down we both got bit by some ants. We checked in around 8pm and left hotel at 830pm. We were in disbelief. I complained to the front desk who all of a sudden couldn’t understand a word of English after a great check in. I had to call Visa so they could reverse the charge because they wouldn’t refund my money. Do yourself a huge favour and don’t book here. For the price they charged me I could have stayed at Baldi ( which we did for 2 nights ) STAY AWAY!!!!

The spread of the virus throughout the world is a terrible thing. To compound that, this resort refused to refund payments made after visitors are barred from the country. Other hotels I booked with and prepaid, Contacted me first offering refunds...just a little sickening...enjoy your Money Green Lagoon...

Rats!!!

The hotel booked us into room they knew was infested with rats. We knew something was strange when we moved in and there were potato chips and other items still in the cutlery drawers from the previous occupants (hiding items from the rats).

We booked the room for its advertised location relative to various activities. We arrived, checked in, dropped luggage in room and went out to dinner. We came back wanting to get an early start to the next day - hike up the mountain at 7:00 am. We turned off the lights around 9:00 pm.

To our delight Green Lagoon provided a FREE self-guided wildlife tour of RATS in our room. There were rats walking the curtain rods, rats in the bamboo wall and rats coming out from behind the kitchen counter. They were scurrying everywhere. As soon as the lights were turned off or you simply stopped moving they were out. My wife opened here eyes to a rat staring down from the ceiling, only to hear another inside her purse. There are so many hiding places in the room they cannot be gotten rid of – see pics.

We went to the front desk after around 11 pm and they said they could do nothing as there were no other rooms. They didn't realize we spoke enough spanish to understand they were discussing the rat issue that they knew they had.

They offered to put poison in the room which they did a bit and left us. The rats immediately came back (ignoring the poison). We left all the lights on and they still came out. Therats wouldn’t even flinch when flips flops were thrown at them – they have been around people before. We were forced to sleep in the car around 1:00 am give or take. The room was, is not fit for habitation.

Rats carry disease, bugs, ticks and the hotel had total disregard for them being everywhere in the room - kitchen counter, bathroom counter, everywhere. Rats can bite the fingers and toes off babies in the night. In all the chasing the rats around we found they had gotten into bread we had. The staff insinuated it was our fault for having food.

In the morning the hotel would not give a refund for night despite sleeping in car but offered useless services we had did not need or want. We moved on leaving this rat-infested hovel which is not fit for habitation. The place should be inspected and shut down.

The hotel overall is in disrepair and rooms lack basic item you would expect paying these prices - on top of the rat problem. The owner was reported to be an absentee owner. The staff behaved like people do when there is a lack of accountability – especially the manager.

I have traveled the world, staying in slums and jungles of Africa and such and never had to be confronted with having to sleep confined in a room with rats – and especially not with my family.

I will write as thorough review as possible in order to give future travelers staying at this establishment a good idea of the area (in my experience, of course) First I will start by saying that I just came back from La Fortuna and of course stayed at Green Lagoon, we did not make prior arrangements concerning travel to and from the lodge beforehand and instead decided to 'wing it' and see our options when we arrived, not my brightest idea. From SJO to Green Lagoon we ended up getting a taxi which cost us $150.00, I recommend you rent a car if you are not afraid to drive fast and make lots of loops around mountains and drive on the occasional unpaved rocky road. I was in La Fortuna for 5 days and was quoted a price of $245.00 from a car rental website I found on the internet which would drop off the car at the airport for you and let you also drop it back at the airport, I'm really sorry I can't remember the website and I deleted the email since I did not book, but it's mainly to give you a general idea of pricing differences. Interbus gave me a quote of 50.00 per person and they run on two scheduled times I believe. So if you are skeptical about driving yourself I would pay the taxi, they are all friendly people.
If there was one regret about my trip, that would be it as it would have saved me quite a bit of money had I not taken taxis everywhere and I would have been able to take that 4hr trip to the beach that I wanted. Oh well, moving on. After the 2:30hr expensive drive from SJO to Green Lagoon we arrived to the lodge and were greeted by Maribel whom I can not say enough about. Prior to the trip the poor soul answered my million and one questions about everything and within minutes of me emailing (it was my first time out of the country and I am a meticulous person by nature) Maribel is attentive, helpful, and of a warm demeanor. She is truly spectacular at her job and I thank her infinitely for her incredible customer service and attending to me so graciously. I too work in the hotel industry here at home and know what a pain some people may be but not once did she seem to be having a bad day or bothered by my constant presence. Like I said, she is amazing. When we checked in Maribel let us know that we would be upgraded to a bungalow free of charge from our originally booked superior room then personally led us to the bungalow opened the door and showed us around. The bungalow we were in was very private and clean and the decor was adorable and very fitting of who Green Lagoon is as a company and the area. The bungalow came equipped with a microwave, fridge, no stove/oven, coffee maker, and dishes, also a dining table. King sized bed, a closet-like area to put our clothes, and of course a bathroom with a shower/no tub. Large and plenty space for two people, I really enjoyed the privacy and definitely recommend staying in the bungalow if possible. When staying with Green Lagoon you are given a free pass to hike up the Cerro Chato (non-guests pay 12 dollars for entrance to the trail) where you sign in and out at their front desk so they know that you are safe. You are also given free breakfast daily, small variations each day which was highly appreciated by me. Carmen is an excellent cook, breakfast is consistently delicious and plentiful. Housekeeping is daily, fresh towels sheets, and even the coffee mugs that we used everyday were washed, the in-room coffee and splenda replenished.
Green Lagoon is apprx 10-15 minutes away from anywhere you want to be in La Fortuna; a taxi ride will cost you most likely less than 10 dollars and I would call Rodrigo (506-8972-2473) I unfortunately met him on my last day of activities and oh so wished I had him for my entire time there, personable, more than friendly and willing to go the extra mile for you, my boyfriend (who you will most likely know who it is through the similarities of our reviews) had a craving for sugar cane that we had had the day before, sugar cane that although grows in abundance in Costa Rica is not available in your local markets or stands. Rodrigo talked to a local taking us back to the hotel, found a home that had sugar cane, talked to the owners and then got a machete to cut a stalk down. If that does not describe a great taxi driver I don't know what does.
This concludes my review of Green Lagoon (and some extras) which I hope will be helpful to anyone already booked or thinking of staying here. You will not regret choosing them!
As a side note, if I must mention something important about staying in La Fortuna is to NOT exchange your money for colones it is a town primarily funded through tourism. Everyone and everything there takes american dollars you will lose money exchanging it. In fact, they usually give you pricing in dollars when you ask "how much" or when they are giving you a total. Skip the exhange fees and pay in dollars or mastercard/visa.
These are just things that I feel I wish I had known for my stay in La Fortuna/Green Lagoon area in order to have better budgeted myself. Please do stay with Green Lagoon and you will have a lovely time in Costa Rica.

My wife and I just came back from our honeymoon and had the time of our lives at Green Lagoon Resort. The service, as all other reviewers said, was superb. We got a 5-star treatment from the two chefs as well as the concierge personell and manager. It is a boutique resort, so our whims and wishes were well catered for at every turn, whether it was food, appointments with different tour places, or any additional services we desired. Make sure to try the "casada "with the tilapia, wrapped in leaf. It's sauteed with garlic and many other herbs, making it a very healthy and tasty meal. My wife's favorite was the sopa de mariscos, a soup filled with different seafood dishes. Enjoy the fresh fruits every morning (along with a very hearty meal for breakfast - it's included!)

We stayed at their honeymoon villa. It had huge windows on every wall. We could see La Fortuna, the nearby city, and its lights at night, and it made for a very romantic dinner, time spent together outdoors gazing at the view. We were able to leave the windows wide open in our bedroom and bathroom as well bc it's surrounded by plants. This was an ingenious idea, as it allowed sunlight to come in while still preserving our privacy. Although it's pricier, I'd highly recommend staying in this type of room. It's located in a spot that's removed from the rest of the hotel. We felt like we were in secluded luxury. Made for much better feel than being surrounded by crowds at a bigger, commercial hotel. We woke up every morning, hearing the chirping of the birds, it really felt like paradise.

The hotel's located literally within a two-minute drive from a great set of waterfalls. It's also located at the entrance to a volcano that has been extinguished, called Cerro Chato. We made the arduous, but glorious hike up this mountain and enjoyed a refreshing swim in the lake inside the volcano. How many people can say they've swam inside a volcano???

We did have Wifi service inside our room, even though it was about 150 yards from the office.

When we checked out of the place, truth be told, it was rather hard saying good-bye to the staff as we really felt like we'd made new friends. We felt compelled to write cards to them and they all came out and hugged us! They say Costa Rica's known for their friendliness, but this was no ordinary staff. We will be back one day!

And for future visitors, have a great attitude at every turn. Remember, this is a third world country... but I believe your trip go a lot better with a few tips:

1) If you decide to rent a car, do get a GPS. It's too easy to miss turns, esp. if you don't speak Spanish. The GPS will also alert you of speed bumps, bridges (which you'll have to yield to others at times)

2) If you're the more adventerous type, do rent a car. It's a lot more fun if you're not at the mercy of tour companies, and the town is only about 10 min away. If you'd rather not think and plan, you'll be fine without a car. But if your budget allows, do rent a Quad Bike for your stay!

3) If you're hiking up Cerro Chato, do rent the hiking poles. I know, sounds rather wimpy, but all hikers we saw wished they'd done that (some made their make-shift poles).

4) Do bring a towel and bathing suit for swimming in Cerro Chato.

5) Do the zip lines from Arenal Tours, which is located immediately to the right as you come to the fork at the end of the road out of Green Lagoon. They have zip lines of up to 980Meters! Staff is super friendly and fun as well.

6) Do get lots of input from the staff. They're very knowledgeable and more than willing to assist you.

7) If you want to go to hot spring (like Tabacon) but cannot afford $400 - $500 / night, this is the place for you! You can also go to Baldi, which has 25 heated pools and water slides. It was so much fun! And for the latter, only $29 for the price of admission and dinner.

8) Whatever you do, and whatever happens... have fun!!!

The drive was enturous one from San Jose.

My girlfriend bought our stay here on Groupon as a christmas present for me back in October 2014. During the months prior to our March 2015 stay she had an insane amount of questions. I mean she bothered these poor people every single day. To my surprise, they answered every single question quickly and courteously. We originally booked the standard room for 3 nights, but decided on staying an extra night after doing some research and becoming overwhelmed with excitement. They let us reserve it for the same value as our Groupon. After a lengthy 3 hour taxi ride from the airport ($150 or 82 mil colones) we arrived at this quiet and dimly lit (it was just after sunset) resort. Maribel (our favorite), was enthusiastic when greeting us and very helpful despite our tired and groggy demeanor. All of the employees at this resort were always in such a friendly mood. There were no questions left unanswered. She informed us that we were going to be upgraded for free from the standard room (basic room in the main building) to the bungalow suite.
The bungalow was a standalone building just far enough away from other buildings for well needed privacy, but not to far of a walk. It consisted of a clean, well-lit bathroom with a standup shower; a huge (and I mean HUGE) living room/ kitchenette (no stove) that included a dinner table with 4 high chairs, a patio set with 2 rocking chairs which we dragged out to the patio facing La Fortuna; and a bedroom with a breakfast table, two chairs, a roomy dresser-wall, and a giant four post bed wrapped with canopy netting. Maribel was kind enough to show us the safe and how to set the password to our preference, and order us a pizza from a nearby cafe.
The resort provides a complimentary breakfast, which was better than anything you are probably used to getting free. Carmen cooks a simple, but delicious typical Costa Rican breakfast that is fresh from their garden and farm. My girlfriend and I had conversations about kidnapping her and bringing her to the U.S.. Seriously some of the best breakfast we have ever had.
Your are also provided a free drink at the bar in the pool area (which has an amazing view of the valley). The jacuzzi area is nice, but I would suggest having the front desk turn it on and warm it up 45 min prior to getting in.
The Climb to Cerro Chato is also free to resort guests. We took that challenge on the first day and made it all the way up and down to the lagoon, but didn't see much because it was overcast. The trail was well marked and easy to navigate.
At the bottom of the resort there is an entrance to La Fortuna Waterfall (Catarata). It is a separate business, but for a small fee ($11 or 6 mil colones) you can climb down the well-built stairs and swim in the waterfall.
The town doesn't seen a long walk from the resort during the daytime, but I wouldn't suggest walking to or from it. We made that mistake the second night and spent 45 minutes climbing up the road in the dark. Taxi rides are cheap ($8 or 5 mil colones), friendly, and quick, so have the front desk call one for you. I would suggest you call Rodrigo (506-8972-2473). I mentioned that I liked chewing on sugar cane and he drove around (for free) asking people if he could cut down a sugar cane for us. He literally chopped one down and sliced it up. He went above and beyond for an $8 taxi ride. Bonus: He listens to Classic American Music and has been to the U.S.
The mornings are peaceful here. The birds wake you up, but not alarmingly. I sat in the rocking chair on the patio for 15 minutes each morning drinking coffee and enjoying the view. The Costa Rican day is from sun up (5:30ish) to sun down (6ish), so most places close and people settle down after that. I would suggest you wake up bright and early to enjoy the full day and ask the front desk for any suggestions about activities they might have.
I would definitely stay at this resort again for the same price. The customer service was world-class and the amenities were abundant.

That sounds about right for a private vehicle. We just got back and we paid about 220 for a van. We were a group of 8 so it worked out. As per my research private transportation only seemed to work out if vehicle is shared by atleast 4 people.
