Volcano Brewing Company, which is formerly known as Hotel Tilawa, was an amazing place to spend and get away from the heat of the coast. The rooms were simple, views spectacular and the staff made the entire experience top notch and not to forget to mention that the dark ale was an extra treat! I wanted to make sure that... More

My boyfriend and I had an amazing experience at the Hotel Tilawa. We drank beers at the bar with the owner JP, who might I add is the most down to earth person, extremely kind and went above and beyond to ensure we had a great experience. I would highly recommend this hotel to anyone who comes to Costa Rica!! More

The hotel was built in about 1990 by the current owner on 20 acres overlooking Lake Arenal. It design is very creative and energy efficient. The hotel had its very busy times when windsurfing was popular a few year back. Currently the hotel is involved in "Green Energy" education programs, organic farming, and micro brewing. During our visit we met... More

On the plus side, we needed a place to stay after we bailed on the 2nd night of a reservation at a terrible place in Arenal. On the down side, Hotel Tilawa was creepy. We knew about it because we found out before our trip that "Volcano Brewing Co" was located there and we're into microbrews. Somehow we found the... More

This place could be so awesome but the furnishings were of absolutely poor, dilapidated quality... things just seemed in a sad state of affairs and completely neglected. The most kept-up part of the place are the external grounds which are maintained. Internally, the bedspread on my bed had ink stains on it and there were a lot of dead bugs... More

I would echo the sentiment of many of the other reviewers on this site. This hotel, when originally built, would surely have been a nice hotel in a great location. However it has not been cleaned or maintained in a considerable period of time. We only stayed one night but the room we stayed in had huge crack across the... More

We stayed at Hotel Tilawa for 4 days. Originally we were only planning on staying two nights, but we loved it so much we decided to stay longer. The hotel is well off the beaten trail and if you are expecting to be pampered by employees, go somewhere else, like tamarindo.... That said though, the manager and his team was... More

This place may have been something nice in its early days. Now its neglected, dirty and just young people sitting around drinking beer. Looked like it hadn't been swept in years. Room was musty, dingy and seemed very unkept. The owner who says he built it himself takes alot of pride in it, but its a shame he doesn't see... More
