This hotel came highly recommended by our Costa Rican friends. However, after a week in the rainforest we pulled into San Jose on a weekday evening at rush hour and I think our city senses were just zonked a bit. We spent one night here before heading out to the airport the next morning. It's location is really good for... More

Excellent location downtown. Convenient to stores, the Mercado Central, the Cathedral Nacional, museums, and restaurant. It has its own very fine restaurant, and breakfast at the restaurant is included with the rooms. It is a lot more than you would get in a U.S.A. motel "breakfast included" meal. There is a chef who will fix your eggs and pancakes as... More

Stayed in a de-luxe room that was spacious and clean. Two double beds and good bathroom w/shower . WiFi costs $6 per day in room but is free in the lobby area. Good breakfast, included in room cost, served in hotel restaurant with a cook who will cook eggs to order including multiple ingredient omelettes. Room overlooked a walking only... More

I used to stay in this hotel back in the "old days" 2005/2006 and the rooms were o.k., but a little threadbare. The carpet was old as was the paint, the bathrooms, well just about everything. When I was able to book a room for $50.00 a night I would sometimes book for a week. I often wondered why, with... More

I have been coming to San Jose regularly for about 10 years. I have stayed at several hotels in the past but now stay exclusively at Balmoral. The hotel is undergoing renovation so allowances need to be made but this is a great hotel and real value for the money. It is located on Avenida Central and so is in... More

Good clean centrally located hotel. We had a large double room overlooking side street. Only fault we could find was - lack of complimentary tea/coffee in room. Had to ask for machine. And refurbishment going on at time of stay so all entry to hotel was via vehicle entrance, but otherwise good hotel, excellent value. Would certainly stay there again. More

Our stays at Balmoral bookended our trip. Our first and last night spent in Costa Rica were at this hotel. We were very please with each stay. From the moment we pulled the car in and were greeted by the friendliest valets to our easy and streamlined process of checking in with the pleasant and multilingual staff, we had no... More

We wanted to stay at a nice hotel on our last nights in costa rica, and thought it would be a treat to stay at the Balmoral. Unfortunately, the rooms were horribly mediocre. One room didn't have a safe as promised online, the next room they put us in had bugs in the bathroom. The service was incredibly rude, unapologetic,... More

As other reviewers have noted, the hotel's location of a pedestrian mall added to its allure. We stayed for one night in mid-December, 2011, and enjoyed looking out our window at the Christmas lights hanging above the street. The Balmoral is also within easy walking distance to shopping and entertainment. The hotel was being renovated, so the only entrances were... More

We stayed here in November. We were upgraded at check in and they accommodated us to stay in the same room although our two-night stay was under two different reservations. The location is convenient if you want to walk around and check out the city. The restaurant though is just ok. Room was very clean and nice. Overall, I'd stay... More
