I cannot recommend Rocky Road enough! Not only for the unique accommodation options and idyllic location out in the countryside but for the absolutely incredible people that run the place. I stopped at Rocky Road for one night on a whim as I worked my way down the Garden Route on the Baz Bus and it was the best decision... More

I spent 14 days at Rocky Road, the first two weeks of February 2013. It was amazing, fabulous, fun and luxurious - in my humble opinion! The setting is glorious - expansive, gracious and dramatic. The accommodation is spacious and very comfortable - with a wonderful array of hot showers or the lovely forest bath to choose from. The grounds... More

Best stretch of road and traffic to date on the way from Kowie to Nature's Valley. Arrive at Rocky Road Backpackers and are greeted by the friendliest host on the planet, Rocky himself and Marietjie. We are made to feel at home instantly and are settled into our awesome luxury tented accomodation overlooking the virgin Tsitsikamma forest. Three Spotless ablution... More

I had a fantastic stay at Rocky Road in one of the three dorm beds. I arrived feeling a little worse for wear & was greeted with a home cooked meal, a hot lemon and honey for my cough & a cosy bed [complete with electric blanket!]. Rocky, Mack, Buddy, Mark & the team make a real effort to ensure... More

R150 per person per night for luxury tents on a platform. Common bathrooms were clean, luxurious and spacious! Dorm room in the main house with 3 single beds just across the toilet. We stayed in tent 3, falling asleep and awaking to the sounds of nature. It was such an amazing experience. Everything is fuzz free, feels very much like... More

We stayed at Rocky Road for 3 days in January on a backpacking trip through the Garden Route. Although we had an issue with our tent the first day, they quickly moved us into one of the volunteer rooms which we had no problem with. Although from the outside Rocky Road appears as your average hostel, it has something special... More

I spent 6 weeks at Rocky Road as a volunteer. It is one of the most beautiful places I've ever been to! Based in the Crags just close to the woods it offers an amazing view and is built with an amazing love to detail. An outdoor shower, bathtub in the woods, a hottub and of course the pétanque field... Rocky Road Backpackers in The Crags, about 18 kms to the east of Plettenberg Bay, is on a secure rural small holding set adjacent to indigenous forest and surrounded by open green pastures with wonderful views of the Tsistsikamma Mountain foothills. Our tranquil, laidback base is the perfect place in which to relax and enjoy nature far from the rush of normal day to day living. The well maintained large gardens have many shaded ‘chill spots’ where one can unwind with a book or the company of others while the plunge pool is a great spot to take off the heat on those hot daysIt’s also a great spot from which to explore and experience the many attractions that the Plettenberg Bay region has to offer. We are close to the world’s highest Bungy, Monkeyland, Birds of Eden, The Elephant Sanctuary, The Tenikwa Wildlife Awareness Centre and unspoilt Natures Valley. We’re well positioned for marine boat safari’s, game reserves and a vast network of scenic hiking trails covering forest, mountain and coastline.Rocky Road Backpackers is conveniently located a mere 2 kms from the N2 and is listed in the current editions of Coast to Coast, The Alternative Route and is also an accredited Baz Bus stop. Our accommodation is the standard mix of dorms, twins and doubles in the main farm house, bungalows and fully equipped luxury safari tents while those preferring to provide their own tents are free to do so.. Our entertainment areas come alive after working hours with an enclosed veranda/bar area with two fireplaces, the outside fireball for fireside chats and when the plunge pool is swung over to the hot tub on Friday nights. Rocky Road has a well established reputation for its quality farm style breakfasts and evening meals – roasts, casseroles, stews and, of course, the end-of-week braai’s. It goes without saying that the social happenings also add to the memories, which is why many people have returned to continue their experience of Rocky Road. ... more   less
