This is probably the oldest operating Hotel on the beachfront and to a huge extent it has maintained good standards - The beachfront (right in front) which is forever changing in standards and has definitely seen better days when it was the most popular place to be in Durban - that has changed drastically in the last few years with...

Stayed here for 5 nights in June 2010 during the World Cup.
The location was great - right on the beach.
The room - a family room - was large and plenty of space and clean.
The hotel however had some very shady characters hanging around in hallways and did not feel very safe. We had people playing ridiculously loud...

That hotel was so superb on all areas even their friendly staff and the magnificent views of the sea.

Stayed for one night. To start there is really limited parking downstairs so be prepared to park on street if you have rented a car or have your own.
Rooms have been partially refashioned not refurbished and don't quite gel. Bathrooms really looking tired and basic maintenance is lacking as can be seen by photos of bath and basin.

I think I visited the Protea Edward 20 years ago. At that time, South Africa could have been on another planet - society has transformed since then :)
The Protea at that time was an old hotel and I was pleasantly surprised at how well the Protea Group has transformed the hotel. I have stayed further up the road in...

Its a nice property right on the main section of the beach, and within walking distance of the convention center (about 15 minutes). Although the neighborhood immediately around it is a bit dodgy. The staff are nice, but seem easily overwhelmed. Rooms are good sized but simple things did not work (leaking a/c), faucets that didn't produce enough water pressure,...

We stayed at the Edward for one night as a stop over for our 10 days cruise from Durban harbour. The room was clean and comfortable but the service was shocking...we had to ask three times for coffee at breakfast just to be ignored and then told they are busy! The location of the hotel is very noisy to a...

We stayed for 3 nights and thoroughly enjoyed it. The hotel is right on the sea front but not at all noisy. We dined in for 1 night and the meal was excellent and the price very reasonable. The car parking cost 60 rand a night-more than worth it for an underground car park. All the staff could not have...
