Do we want Catimore or Catiless? Probably you don’t want it at all, but it is arranged for you via a Bromo and Ijen tour. Hopefully, by the time that you are reading this you still have either the option to cancel the booking or have survived a night at Catimore without any mental or physical traumas (congrats, your nights will never be as worse again). If you are in the undesired position of still having to stay at Catimore, bring your own pillowcase, sheets, towels, toilet paper, water, food and preferably a tent and mattress so you can sleep outside and get disturbed as much as we were disturbed by the mosque every hour for at least 15 minutes (not kidding). The only thing that could make a night at Catimore less worse is a decent amount (read at least as much to get you wasted) of beers. Unfortunately, we were in the unlucky position of not bringing sufficient cash because we thought there would be an atm somewhere nearby and therefore were required to “sleep” here completely sober (avoid this at all times!). Although the Blue Fire at Ijen was slightly overrated I would book that addition to the tour every other time as it allows you to leave this “hotel” three hours earlier. Besides everything else, let me try to explain the friendliness of the staff below: Yes, that was empty for a reason. In Tripadvisor it is mandatory to give at least one star. This star therefore represents the moment we were finally leaving Catimore after probably the worst night of my entire life and reading the lovely negative reviews of this “thing” afterwards. Life is hard, but staying at Catimore is inhuman - Albert Einstein (just before he went to the Ijen) Personal note: 1. To the women that said she blamed herself for being a bad mother by bringing her kids there. Please note that no normal human being is able to predict the grossness of this thing upfront. 2. I added a picture of the hotel room. I did not include a picture of the bathroom as I forgot to take one, but imagine a Saw-like basement turned into a bathroom. …

Yeah it’s old yes it’s cheap but it’s in the middle of nowhere so you kind of don’t have a choice , come in with low low expectations you’ll leave happy , the main 120 year old guest house is a good bit of history,

You will not have time to explore the best things in Catimore Homestay if just stay 1 night. So rush through! My Malaysian friends from Sarawak stayed 2 nights here and you know, we loved it! The concept of this homestay is family. The room is good you know, the pool is clean, and start from 04.00 pm you may enjoy the jacuzi sulfur. How relaxing! This homestay near the Balawan hidden waterfalls, Niagara Mini waterfalls, and local hot springs (very good!). The employees are helpful. At night sometimes for dinner is buffet, sometimes ala carte. For lunch mostly ala carte or you may request Set Menu. At night Coffee/Tea is free. Hot water is available for making Cup Noodles at night. Amazing.

This place is really not as bad as many tourists have described it ! I have the impression that those tourists are those discovering all Indonesia in 2-3 weeks time... and are used to luxury conditions. But we, the independent travellers, have surely slept in other simple and basic accommodations like this, so don't be put off by the 50 % of bad reviews ! Room was small but the double bed had very comfy mattress and very clean bedsheet with one blanket. They don't provide upper bedsheet, but, as I always travel with my own, this was not an issue. In the small bathroom there was probably only cold water but as I spent the whole afternoon in the thermal bath one km away, I didn't take shower. The walls were freshly painted so no sight of mold. All the rooms open to the huge covered common area with tables. I arrived end Oct. without a booking and paid 200'000 idr. At around 4-5 pm other guests arrived, the majority were couples with a private driver/car : we were 9 tourists alltogether. Dinner at 7 for 65'000 idr : soup, piece of chicken, piece of omelette, rice, piece of fried potato, free tea : it was ok. Wi-fi working well. The * (star) that Lonely Planet attributed is indeed exaggerated but it's probably a way to differenciate it from the Arabica, as these are the only two accommodations close to Ijen. By public transport : angkot from Sempol to Bondowoso at 06:00 (ojek from Catimor / Blawan to Sempol : 50'000). From B/woso to Sempol at 09:30 (25'000). The majority of the tourists left at 1 am and drove the 15 km to Pos Paltuding : if you are an independent traveller, you might ask for a lift. As I stayed the nights before in Palm Hotel Bondowoso, I "hitchhiked" a lift at midnight by asking to some few tourists.…

This place is a typical tourist trap, serving groups visiting the Ijen volcano. Busses arrive at the end of the day, leaving in the early morning again. In between you can go for the only dish they serve (65k) and, if lucky, a bintang. The rooms itself are seriously up for big renovation to say the least. Luckily, since we left the next morning at 1am, we didn’t have to use the bathroom... It’s a one hour drive to the starting point of Ijen. No WiFi that actually worked.

This place is only a starting point to sleep before visiting the Ijen crater. Whole place looks actually fantastic and in former times it was like a hacienda of the coffee plantage owner. Big spacious rooms and a big park around the facility which is located near the coffee drying facility. Forget any restaurants or atm on the spot or nearby, you are really far from those. All over it was nice to spend the evening there, before leaving for the vulcano.

We spent one night in this homestay as part of a bromo ijen tour. After the expensive lava view lodge at bromo which was horrible, I was a bit scared to go to catimore. Surprisingly it's not that bad. it's old and not really clean but it's kind of ok in comparison. Bring a pair of sheets with you because there is only an itchy and dusty blanket to cover you. The food was ok too. However the fountains and dogs noise made it hard to get some good sleep.

We rested here for about 6 hours as we arrived in Ijen late and had to depart for the hike at 1.30am. To put in context, this is a homestay situated in a tiny town in the mountains and not a hostal or hotel. As mentioned in a prior review, this may be the standard in this region. We ordered the ala carte buffet dinner and it was decent. As we arrived late, the cooks left shortly after preparing our meal and we could not order more food. Beer was unrefrigerated and they had ran out of ice. The rooms are very very very old, especially the toilets. It is honestly bare bones and even the bedsheets looked dubious. We managed to sleep for a couple of hours. There is wifi though. When we returned the next morning after the hike, the whole town had no electricity. Swimming pool seems clean enough.…

This Homestay is a ~130 year old house that used to belong to the owner of a large coffee plantation. Based upon the average rating/review one can easily surmise that the place has seen better days. I'm not sure what kind of conversion this property underwent when it became a homestay but this and anything done since is well under par. The place is dirty, noisy, offers no choice for dinner and a quick study of the electrical system reveals the existence of an outdated, improperly installed fire hazard. I decided to have a look at some other properties in the area and found the standard to be very similar so if your looking for a place to stay in this area this property seems as good as any. Unfortunately they are all pretty much six of one or half a dozen of the other. The only two redeeming qualities that this property offers are the proximity to your starting point for your Mount Ijen hike and the fact that your stay is likely to be a very short one. The free wifi is so slow and unreliable it might as well not exist but I believe this to be a general issue in the area and not necessarily just at this hotel. Cell signals are spotty as well.…

To speak the truth the feeling about this place is rather mixed. I really do not mind the quality but I just feel that the price is not worth for that kind of quality. This place is very laid back. Lets go through the hotel by category. Rooms There are two types, the newer wing is the one at the reception side. It is tiled floor and the bedding and toilet seems better and cleaner. The older wing is where the old building itself, it is a huge bungalow with many rooms, and some of the rooms are beyond repair. There is a mouldy smell in the old building and facilities are really bad, they charged me 295,000Rp for the week end one night. I felt that the room is only worth 150,000Rp. I suspect they never really do any house keeping or cleaning. My room was in the old wing, and the sliding door need maintenance. The toilet was leaking but the good thing was there was really hot good water. Besides that there were nothing in the room, I had to ask them for the bath towel and a roll of tissue, you need to bring your own washing materials like shampoo and soap etc. The bedding was not that clean as I had a bit of rashes after sleeping there for two nights. The new wing looked better, try to ask them for it. Facilities No tv no hot water pot in the room, you can get hot drinking water from the reception. Drinking water ( bottles) are not provided, so you need to purchase, there are small provision shops outside the village, which I felt it was really nice and organised. There are also small stores selling food outside and it is quite tasty too. The swimming pool is cold but clean very good for the afternoon to laze around. There are large living room areas in the hotel old wing, make it a very instagrammable place. The gardens outside are also beautiful. Very nearby is the hot spring area, I did not see it until when I left the place. Seems like good. Food The hotel provides daily breakfast boxes with simple bread ( with Jam) and hard boiled egg. Tea and coffee are outside the reception most of the time. They do sell beer at about 4,500Rp the big Bintang bottle. Simple dishes like Nasi Goreng( fried rice) Mee goreng( fried mee instant) or soup noodles are also available. There are shredded chicken and fried egg accompanying it. Price is roughtly 20K Rp. Staff The staff are not very friendly and there were many miscommunication , but all in all I will give it to them. Overall If there is other choice, I think it will be better to stay elsewhere.…
