If you are going to fish, whale watch or take the ferry to Catalina, this is the place to stay. I felt like the hotel was going through some growing pains...either the folks running the place are just learning the business or they have so much to do they are still working on getting things up to par. The mattresses... More

Old rooms (floors 1 and 2) : dark and gloomy, but with character terrible/dark lighting in the rooms so no where to get ready or do makeup plus no good mirrors in rooms terrible acoustics - so LOUD all the time + poor layout meant people were dinning/partying right outside your window New rooms (floor 3) : bright and clean,... If you're thinking of staying in Newport Beach at the Balboa Inn, don't waste your time. The hotel is lost between capital improvements, over-charging and lack of service. The wifi works if you leave your room and go to the Siena restaurant in the hotel. You have to wait till noon every Wednesday for them to be open. The rooms... More

We booked this hotel on a whim based on the location across the street from the Beach. The photos looked very cute of the hotel. When we arrived in our room- a family room- with 2 beds separated by a wall, we were very disappointed. The room was very outdated, the TV looked to be from the 1970s and it... More

We wound up in Newport Beach because of a relative's untimely death. We stayed at the Balboa Inn because my sister-in-law got a great rate. Her room turned out to be incredibly shabby. Our ocean view "suite" was fine but not much of a suite. The continental breakfast was cereal, muffins, bagels and fruit. There was coffee and orange juice,... More

We stayed here for my niece's wedding and were so pleased with the amazing location- practically right on the sand. The sunrise and sunset views were stunning! The staff was very friendly, helpful and welcoming, and everything we needed for fun, dining and adventure was in walking distance from our room. Great getaway location for travelers coming from out of... More

My family & I have been coming to this very charming hotel for over ten years. After renting local beach houses we decided to give it a try & never ever regretted our decision. We love Laura at the front desk, of course Michele the owner all of the staff, and especially Mario. After 35 1/2 years of marriage with... More

I have stayed at this hotel for many years and have loved the experience every time. The location is unbeatable, the proximity to the beach, pier, fun zone, restaurants and bars is unmatched in the area. The staff is friendly and welcoming and the rooms are clean with an amazing oatmeal bar soap that my husband and I love. Opening... More

I was hesitant to make a reservation based on other review but after talking with the lovely woman at the desk I decided to do it. We were given an amazing rate for the room since it's off season - on the newer resort side. Great balcony, great view. You should know that there is a parking lot between you... More

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
The newly remodeled Balboa Inn, in Newport Beach, Orange County, is a place where casual beachside ambiance and classic Old World charm combine in a historic landmark that’s lured Southern California's rich and famous for decades. Set on the colorful boardwalk at the foot of the Balboa Pier, this oceanfront establishment’s relaxed air may have you kicking off your high heels before you stroll down the aisle. Built in 1929, this upscale Orange County inn has entertained such notables as Howard Hughes, Barry Goldwater and a host of other politicians, entertainers and honeymooners. Once owned by the Los Angeles Lakers’ Kareem Abdul Jabbar, its nine-foot ceilings still bear a telltale sign of the basketball star. A recent $6-million addition features two oceanview terraces, a new oceanview Italian tile sundeck with hot tub, 34 upgraded rooms, 11 top-of-the-line suites and convenient subterranean valet parking. Guests enter the Inn through the Mediterranean-style courtyard, a natural space for pre-ceremony mingling. With its original tile, adobe walls, potted palms, bar and the soothing sound of surf crashing in the background, the space is a comfortable area for people to come together. Meanwhile, you, your groom and all your attendants have full use of an oceanview honeymoon suite with a Jacuzzi and fireplace. For the wedding ceremony itself, options include the hotel’s magnificent second-floor Siena Terrace overlooking the ocean, as well as the nearby gazebo at Peninsula Park and the adjacent rugby field fronting the ocean, where a decorated arch can provide a focal point. After you’ve said your “I do’s,” the Pacific Ocean provides fabulous scenery for photos taken on the pier, the sand or the grassy field next to the beach. When you’re ready to receive your guests, return to the upstairs terrace with its panoramic views from Catalina Island to Dana Point. Or, hold your wedding reception in the Siena Grand Dining Room and adjoining courtyard, where antique streetlights and colorful murals of gondolas on canals capture the romance of Venice. Along with five-star Italian cuisine by the restaurant’s gifted executive chef, you’ll enjoy a dreamy indoor-outdoor setting cleansed by refreshing sea spray. Far removed from the straight-laced formality of more corporate properties, the Balboa Inn is just steps from Newport’s famed Fun Zone. Here, you can pose for some playful photos on the historic carousel and Ferris wheel, or take a stress-busting ferry ride across Newport Bay. After you’ve returned to your guests to dance the night away, there’s one more thing you’ll probably want to do before heading for your honeymoon suite: go for a moonlit stroll along the sand. ... more   less
