Shaun and I hiked in, the howler monkeys were active in the trees. They are very loud and its is very exciting. They were trying to get the power back on when we were there, it may be available by now. But I have to say it really didn't matter that there wasn't power. It was so peaceful and beautiful.... More

When we arrived we were a day later than they expected us and we just missed out on letting baby turtles back into the sea. We had a lot of fun with David looking for turtles at 4am and then getting to bury turtle eggs that would hatch 45 days later. David was an excellent host and we learned a... More

I recently visited Tigre Salvaje, learned about the project, and walked the beach at night with David to help save some endangered sea turtles. The location is a bit remote and it's a very quiet area, so don't expect anything by way of shops and commercial entertainment - it's really in the middle of nowhere (though it doesn't take all... This place is dope, there are all sorts of animals that living in the U.S. you don't see unless they are caged up and sad looking. Every once in awhile Dave cracks open a coconut and puts the pieces on a platform then 30 monkeys appear from no where and slowly come and grab the pieces. There's also a bunch... More

I am a solo female traveller in her late 20's and I spent 2 weeks volunteering with David Teichmann at Tigre Salvaje last summer and this project has made such an impact on me, and others who have been to stay. A true maverick, David works alone to ensure the survival of native monkey and turtle populations in the local... More

I have been to Tigre Salvaje several times for weekend trips. I love the adventure of hiking in. I love spending time with the turtles. The perfect vacation for me doesn't involve sitting around a pool and returning home with a sunburn. I want to return with stories. Like getting lost and hiking in. Searching for turtles eggs in the... More

Tigre Salvaje is the last word in eco lodges. It exists for one purpose, it is one man's personal crusade to protect the last of wildlife on the Burica Penninsula, especially sea turtles. This has not been an easy task, most of the locals enjoy eating turtle eggs and even the turtles themselves. As one source put it. "any animal... More

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
David Teichmann moved to Punta Burica 7 years ago and began an impressive effort to establish the area as a wildlife sanctuary. Difficulties with ANAM led him to concentrate fully on saving endangered species of sea turtles. Dave has built a beautiful house, right on the Pacific Ocean, with guest accommodations located on the bottom floor. For only $55/night you can relax in these spacious rooms and if you so desire - accompany Dave on a night patrol of the beach, searching for green, hawksbill, and olive Ridley turtles building their nests and laying their eggs. Although it's illegal to sell turtle eggs in Panama, it is still widely done - and the eggs that Dave saves are placed in one of his three incubators that he has on his property. After 45 to 60 days, he releases the hatched turtles on the beach just in front of the incubator, where he makes sure they safely reach the water. In addition, Dave has a beautiful Margay that he keeps in caged area on his property. This cat was rescued from the pet trade, and has since flourished on Dave's property - so much, in fact, that she's called "Pansi Gorda" or Fat Tummy. If you have any interest in conservation or wildlife, Dave offers an extraordinary unique experience - to collect, bury, and release turtle eggs and hatchlings in a beautiful beach setting. It's relaxing, rewarding, and inspiring. Whether you assist on night patrols, or relax in your guest room, Dave is simply happy to have guests and share his story. ... more   less
